@ScarlettInSpace, unfortunately the "must do" run is closed, Madloch is a semi groomed ski route but no snow cannons so needs good natural snow which is not in abundance currently it often doesnt open until January even in good snow years. The other really nice run in the Lech / Zürs area is Zürsertalli (take the Muggengratbahn chairlift) its a red piste with a steepish pitch to start off, great scenery usually great snow and there is a small restaurant Flexenhäusl tucked away at the bottom of the run (next to the road) which is worth a visit. Dont know about apres in Lech (suspect more champagne & canapes) but it is worth the trip to St Anton to visit the Mooserwirt (next to the piste just above the Galzig lift station) ski & poles have a habit of going missing so pay out the couple of Euros to put them in the "cloakroom", There are post buses back to Lech until around 19:00 (they go from the train station not the bus place next to the Rendl lift). Lots of other similar places nearby Krazy Kanguruh, Sennhutte, Heustadl.

I'd spend a morning skiing around the Zurs area (its high and snow usually good), there are some nice reds off the Zürserseebahn and Seekopfbahn, do a few laps of those 2, then head up Muggengratbahn and ski the blue back down to the same lift, then go up again and take the long red Muggengrat (note you'll maybe need to tuck the last bit as it flattens out into town). Only thing you'll need to bus between Zurs and Lech if Madloch is shut.
If you don't fancy busing it then a day in Warth is also worth it - take the Auenfeldjet lift over there and back.

First day. It is character-building.
A mixture of rain & snow up top and rain at the village level. Predictably, the snow is a variant of semi-frozen slurpee. But… it is fantastic being back here and on skis for the first time in 3 months.

Glad you had a fabulous time; I'd say we had no better than a very good time across the same period. There's a lot of icy pistes about, even very high up. And the lower parts involve knee-deep piles of artificial icing sugar on top of icy pistes. The snow cover is very thin, there are bare patches on pistes, and St Anton itself is brown/green. On the plus side, apart from two days, the slopes were generally quiet and there weren't queues for lifts. And there was space in the Moose.

@James the Last, but Lech is still white. Nothing really unusual for this time of year, it happens every now and then. Remembering 1988/89, 1991, 2014-2016 (and no, I'm not denying climate change)

Thanks, @Markymark29.
Much more pleasant day today. Sunshine in the morning. While it is now (2pm) cloudy, visibility remains good. The surface is fast but enjoyable to ski.
Alas, there is a downside… every man, and both his dogs, came out to ski today. Lech/Zürs stopped selling day tickets. Fortunately there are many fair-weather skiers and long-lunchers. It is now fairly quiet. Maybe 20 people on Kandahar a few minutes ago.
I am going to download at the end of the day. Did the Galzig home run this morning. It was insane. Too many people way out of their depth, spearing off in random directions. Not worth it.

@James the Last, We stayed high and didn't ski below Gampen/ Zammermoos bottom station lift level, caught Galzig lift down rather than chew through the mush at low level. In fairness we didn't go with any high expectations, have skied the region for many years and knew what it would likely be like, and tbph we were pleasantly surprised. We weren't looking for mega mileages or off-piste on this trip, it's the first time we'd skied since March 20 lockdown so we were quite happy getting our legs back and cruising pistes and enjoying the mountain views, didn't see any brown areas on pistes we skied. We would have gone around to Zurs/ Lech/ Warth but given that Madloch/ Zug wasn't accessible couldn't be bothered the snow in Anton was great for our needs on this trip. Plan on being much more adventurous in early March.

Yep, I remember on several occasions having to trudge, carrying skis, over the grass covered hill from piste 50 near Heustadl tp the Kangaroo. Would have been around that time late 80s early 90s. And it would have been mid season February.

I don't think this has anything to do with climate change; it's just weather. You cannot draw conclusions about climate change from the weather in one fortnight one year.
The booby prize, IMO, went to Christmas Eve when there had been about 12" of stodgy porridge dumped on the slopes. I've really never skied anything like that before!
And the fact is, you could have a perfectly nice week's holiday in St Anton with plenty of skiing; for all that the off piste was limited, the pistes were a bit icy, there were plenty of bare patches, and the town was brown. But it's St Anton, and we had rain at resort level the last time I was there at about the same time (and we had loooooads of snow too that time).

Snowing gently at village level. A dusting, maybe 1cm, on the deck. Temps are marginal at present (@8am) - 0C in the village, and -5C on the Galzig. The webcams suggest fairly strong winds. It is going to be a character-building day…

Yeah, the vibe is different during a big event, but one that I remember well & positively was the 2004 FIS DH. Three Austrians: Maier, Eberharter, and some other Austrian dude filled the podium. The presentation was in the carpark of the Schwartz Adler. To say there were some excited and excitable Austrians in town would be an understatement, but in a good way. The place was partying!

Johann Grugger was 3rd. 7 out of the top ten were Austrians. Those were the days (for Austria).

The Big Snow (if it pans out) will come on Thursday & Friday with freeze level 1000M & 1500M respectively
I doubt any snow off the official pistes will hang around long (where it's grass now) the ground is just to warm ..
I saw some spring flowers the other day
Guaranteed High Avalanche risk and Lift Closures throughout and after (weekend)

Wepowder is suggesting over 1.5m of snow before the weekend for the upper slopes https://wepowder.com/en/st-anton-am-arlberg#valluga. The automatic forecast tends to be on the optimistic side but even so it appears the snow drought is over Might mean avalanche issues though.

Fabulous morning. Maybe 10 - 15cm in the village and closer to 30cm on the Galzig.
A joy to ski fresh snow after a week on ice.
Upper mountain lifts currently closed, as is Steißbachtal. Still snowing.
St Anton has taken on its accustomed winter cloak.

@ulmerhutte, looks good on the webcams cant do this weekend but the following one seems to be on hopefully by then Madloch etc will be open
I am sure @stanton, will be on soon with top secret info on the Steissbachtal, personally I avoid it as always too many people on a narrow piste, Kandahar is a much better run but know many find this a problem but I suspect the avalanche issue might be back this season the wet weather might mean the perfect conditions for glide slides on the grassy slopes.

@stanton, make up your mind, one day there is no snow the next too much. You are completely clueless about weather forecasts, have a look at what some Dutch folk are saying https://wepowder.com/en/st-anton-am-arlberg#valluga maybe 1m at the top of the Valluga , 20cm in the village where the roads are. Perfect for opening the pistes no sign of any snowmaggedon!

@munich_irish, Steißbachtal is important to me because it allows me to ski Bachseite. People were ducking the ropes, but a) it is a stupid risk, & b) I have seen ski patrol at the end of Steißbachtal pulling tickets of miscreants.
Kandahar was populated by VW Beetle-sized moguls by afternoon.

|

@ulmerhutte, understand about Bachseite, the piste is no big loss (except to those who are too nervous to ski Kandahar) . The moguls can grow to an impressive size
