Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Rack - Hire Car

Apologies in advance for daft question, but how many pairs of skis does a ski rack hold? Is there a standard size you get with a rental car company?

never put skies on a roof rack unless they are in a ski bag or a roof box, the salt from the road will destroy your bindings!

Will no doubt depend on the rental car co., so you would need to read the fine print and also best to contact the hire car co. (direct to the branch you are renting from if possible).

Plenty of discussion on protection or otherwise for the skis here already.

@ster, yes, but nothing on that thread that actually answers my question! Was just wondering if hire companies had a standard size ski rack and what its capacity was, sure there must be SHs out there who hire cars with racks and might know? @Charliee, would only be for a short journey, looking at hire cars next year large estate like we usually hire is extortionate, so was considering a compact estate with ski rack, which comes out much cheaper. Have tried a few rental websites but they all ask the desk when you pick up the car, which is of course no use to anyone!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@trmacc, Hertz Geneva always used to be 2 pairs, but not looked for years.

An inflatable Handirack was a cheaper option for me and takes 4 pairs.

@snowdave, thanks, though presumably you can't load your skis up in sight of the rental office?

@trmacc, the link wasnt meant to, it was about the protection point raised @Charliee.

And I was pointing out that each rental car co will likely have different rack capacity and may well have changed since any experience older than this season.

We rent station wagons so we can get the ski bag inside. Even a compact estate should be ok depending on your pax, its layout and your other bags, althought try and "pick" a model that has a ski hatch (e.g. Golf or Passat wagons) as it helps. Although the model is of course not guaranteed, you have more of a leg to stand on when you argue that whatever they are giving you if it doesnt have a ski hatch is not the equivalent of what you booked and they give you an upgrade.

@ster, thanks. Seems odd to me that there isn't a "standard" size of ski rack, obviously whilst realising that may be car size dependent. Have always just got a SW/Estate but with the new crazy prices trying to work out how to make it all a bit cheaper.

@trmacc, not that strange as there are all sorts of racks and practices out there. Also note that not all vehicle models can take a ski rack that the rental co has as I found out when trying to book with Hertz (you could request a rack on the booking, it would then get rejected after the booking was processed) , so you have to be careful.

Perhaps then go with @snowdave's suggestion, rent a sedan and use a handirack.

No problem doing that at Geneva. As long as you don’t damage the car, I can’t see why they’d care. Yo need to have a cloth available so you can clean the roof perfectly beforehand, a piece of grit under the rack could make a bit of a mess!

However, I wouldn’t want to do a long journey with a handirack - they are a bit noisy and the strap inside the car can impinge on headroom a bit.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

We handiracked it from Geneva over Christmas on a 208. 4 people in the car, 2 large bags in boot, 4ski bag on roof and hand luggage packed around kids in the back. Was a little tight but just about do able.

Just remember to take the rack off if it's going to rain overnight, the inside of the car got rather damp!
