Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

When are skis too old?

I ski very hesitantly on piste. My son and husband trash their skis off piste.

The top of all of our skis has damage from (I think) our magnetic ski carrier.

When are skis too old? Mine are a hand-me-down from a relative who no longer skis. They’re at least 13 years old. My husbands are about 3/4 y old (bought as unused ex-rentals).

@LavaLaura, i by no means and expert, but skis themselves, depends what damage is done to the bases. However bigger concern is probably bindings.

@LavaLaura, what on earth are they doing on the off piste?

Skiing through/up trees seems to be causing most of the damage.

Also lots of skiing next to the piste late in the season.

When last serviced they said they couldn’t tell me skis had actually been used….

We had the bindings in two of the pairs checked last month - hiring ski boots - would they have alerted to binding issues?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

First thing - are the bindings on the manufacturer's indemnified list? If that's a "no" then it's time to get rid. If yes, they release test ok and a reputable shop doesn't think there's anything wrong with them then no reason to part with them on safety grounds.

Second thing - is there enough base and edge left? Like can they be ground flat and sharpened properly? If "no" then it's time to make them into furniture.

Third thing - skis that have reached the end of their life or got water in the core or something like that will feel dead and lifeless to ski. My beloved Scott Missions (2006/07 era) lost all of their snap. You could still ski them, but there was no energy or feedback coming out of the ski during the turn.

Fourth - if you ski off piste you will hit rocks. There is no way round this. Rock damage will stop a ski being usable but will do so in such a way that you won't need to ask "should I still be skiing this?"

I'm still on mine. Laughing Seem to be doing ok on them, although I will admit they're not as lively as they used to be.

@Kramer, they have probably done 200 days. It's like skiing on wet pasta.

Mine are probably on about 100.

I do still love them though, excellent all mountain skis that I can ride anywhere.

When the sections of edges under the foot have come away and you can't get any spare ones or the screw holes have given up.

High quality wood core skis don't really lose their snap in my experience. I've only ever had one pair of foam core Atomics, which were great for two seasons and dead noodles after that. Never again. Have run out of base on one pair of Völkls... I guess the guy in the shop was too enthusiastic with the grinder! So essentially my buying decisions are driven by the need for shiny things.
