Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Trip Report - Mayrhofen 5th - 12th March

Haha, of course. It's odd how different it looks from up there - when we rode that bit (several laps) we went up Olpererer 1/2 and hopped through the ap above the 'snow farm trap ridges' to access an off piste drop to the end of the lift, so never quite got that elevated straight along the line of the valley view.

I've only been to Mayrhofen once, I've a feeling it won't be the last. There's so much to explore. Penken, Ahorn, Hintertux and Zell am Ziller all riden, but I was amazed at how much we didn't see in the week, the whole Gerlos/Zillertal arena looks like a huge area not touched........

Great trip report! We were there the following week (12-19 March) and had an absolute ball of a time. We were in the Mayrhofen area, in glorious sunshine, for the first couple of days, then Hochzillertal-Hochfugen for a day with light cloud cover (which meant the snow stayed in much better condition throughout the day), next day Zell am Ziller (same conditions), back to Mayrhofen on the Thursday then Hochzillertal-Hochfugen for the final day. A week's flat out skiing but there were still loads of runs we didn't do, and we didn't go to Hintertux at all (concerned about visibility as the clouds had come down rather).

It was a busier resort than I normally like (I've been spoiled over the years by the Monterosa ski area in Italy, which is always quiet), but it had the best lift system I've ever come across and so there were no real lift queues to speak of.

Thanks to whichever Snowhead it was who recommended Patrick at Green Room as a bootfitter - he did a great job with my OH whose boots were giving her agony (she bought a new pair of boots, carefully selected, which didn't press on her ankle bone).

If you think Mayrhofen lift system is excellent (it is), then wait until you go to Saalbach or Ischgl. There are no real queues (5 mins +) in Saalbach in mid Feb. The quietest resort I've been to is Obergurgl where there really are no lift queues. Barely anything but fast chairs/gondolas in all those resorts; Austria lift investment is just amazing.

I remember being impressed by Obergurgl some years ago, certainly. Maybe it's even better there now. Certainly the Austrians are not reluctant to plough a good deal of their ski revenue into new infrastructure, which is commendable.

Probably two new gondolas since you've been there (one about 5 years old replacing and extending a t bar and opening up a new slope, one new this year replacing a chair that was actually Ok... there would have been another gondola upgrade this year if there hadn't been Covid)

This last trip to Mayrhofen has made Austria nudge just ahead of Italy in my favour as ski destination. I love so much about Italy, not least the food, but there's just so much skiing in resorts like Mayrhofen, the infrastructure is amazing, and there's a general joie de vivre about the skiing which I love. I have to confess I'm no dancer on tables, but even a miserable curmudgeon like myself can't help but have a smile on my face with the apres-ski there.

Mayrhofen today is still holding on, we genuinely haven’t seen a cloud in the sky since we arrived on Saturday. It’s hot and glorious. Spring conditions of course a bit icy in the morning but cut up and slushy in the pm but awesome fun. Just about to hit the bruck and stadl now. Nobody wore masks anywhere for a few days but one of the skibus drivers is now insisting on them to board although he doesn’t wear one himself. Haven’t seen them asked for anywhere else including all the lifts.

Some snow forecast for the weekend, I see. Wish I was back out there! I'd love to go there some time just after a big powder dump, as there looks like a load of fun skiing to be had off to the sides of the pistes. Normally do as much off-piste as we can when we ski, but this time it was 99% on piste.

@KirwanKir, there's a depot at the lift, but while there will be toilets I'm not so sure about showers. When we had a late flight out, we were on the slopes until 3pm and then went to the swimming pool for a wind down and shower before the drive to Munich.

Just wondering if anyone who's been in Mayerhofen recently could recommend good ski instructors? I am intermediate and would like to get a lesson or two to tune up at the start of my trip in march

We used Ski Pro Austria for our kids. Always got a Dutch instructor and found it good.

I used Habeler when switching to skiing a few years ago. It’s mainly 1-1 teaching. No complaints and different times to most schools.
