Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Flaine - recommendation for my beginner partner

She's 30, I'm taking her skiing for the first time.

Keen to get her some private tuition sorted (unless people think this is a waste) in w/c 6th March.

Any tips or recommended ski schools/instructors are greatly appreciated. I've got in touch with ESF/ESI but wanted to check any local recs too Smile

I had a good experience with ESI - though that was a long time ago. I personally would go with them over ESF. I have no knowledge of other ski schools.

I think this was the Instructor who taught me all those years ago - now gone independent: https://www-esi--ski-com.translate.goog/our-coachs/nicolas-pouppeville?_x_tr_sl=fr&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=sc

Amazing, thanks for getting back so quickly. I've asked them if they can do some lessons for her Smile

Keen to hear if anyone else has recommendations.

I've seen Lynne Stainbrook (Flaine Ski Clinic) recommended on here before.

Been in a similar situation to you, suitability of private lessons vs group is down to the individual having them. My partner got on very well with private lessons and felt they suited her personality, the cost is significant but we looked at it as an investment.

I would always look for a self employed, independent instructor if possible, having had experience with ESF, they are fine, but the instructors don’t seem to take as much of an interest in the individual or how much they get out of the sessions as someone who is doing it as their own business. Obviously this is not going to be the case every time and others experience may have differed. My view is that if you’re spending likely €800 on a week of private tuition, you want the very best, which is understandable!

Another thing on the group vs private front - it might save you money in the long run, I.e a week worth of private might be more beneficial than 3 or 4 weeks of group tuition.

On the question of Group vs Private - the answer is, "It depends".

It depends on the individual taking the Group lesson. Some thrive on the social aspect and the laugh. Others hate it.

It depends on the Instructor and the class size.

It depends on the natural talent of the individual. It's much more fun being the best in the class, rather than the one always holding it up.

Lady F simply wouldn't have learned to ski without Private lessons - she hated classes.

So both have pluses and minuses. The Privates are much more expensive. Much more intense, but progress is usually much quicker.

Bear in mind that if she is only spending a short time in private lessons you'll probably have to ski with her the rest of the time. Which will be a test of your patience and devotion. And might end in tears (literally).
