Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

UNESCO may exclude Bulgarian resorts from World Heritage status

UNESCO is to decide whether to exclude the Bansko and Dobrinishte ski resorts in southwest Bulgaria as a Natural World Heritage Site. The resorts are currently within the World Heritage site, "Pirin National Park". The ecological organisation ‘Save Pirin’ has said that the exclusion of the resorts might happen as early as July this year, at the next UNESCO session....
A coalition of non-governmental organisations is worried that the construction of new ski tracks in Pirin Park violated the ‘Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage’. They have written a damming report dramatically entitled, ‘Bansko Ski Zone – a Crime without Punishment’, which contains an assessment of the legal violations, loss of biodiversity and landscape, and social and economic consequences associated with the construction of the Bansko Ski Zone.

The main concern is that the ski tracks will cause soil erosion. There is also evidence that development of the ski zone has had a major and irreversible impact on a large number of species in the park. But, there is also concern that if the ski resorts are excluded from the protected park area, the environmental problems in the region might get worse.
The Bulgarian Environment and Water Affairs Ministry said that even if the changes were imposed, it would maintain control over illegal construction in the region.

Meanwhile, the country’s Center for Economic Development described Bansko as the most rapidly developing Bulgarian ski resort. It saw a 35 percent increase in visitors this season. Over 100 million euros were invested in construction at the resort last year, and more than 150 new hotels, guesthouses and holiday complexes were registered between December 2005 and May 2006. The resort is also one of the proposed venues in Sofia’s 2014 Olympic Winter Games bid.

Apparently, a new ski resort is to be built in Bulgaria's Rhodope Mountains, thanks to promised investment of over 250m Levs by local and international financiers. In response to the criticism that environmental damage has occurred at other Bulgarian resort developments, the company behind Perelik have said that the resort will mostly be built on open, low altitude terrain. They also plan to plant 35-40 per cent more trees than they remove when clearing the mountainside for piste. The resort will have 55km of piste served by 25 ski lifts and snow-making. It will be built close to the villages of Smolyan, Stoikite, Gela, Solishta, Stikul and Mougla.

admin, I am not surprised at the proposed withdrawl of UNESCO status. It is the sheer magnitude of developments in Bansko ( and also in Borovets and Pamperovo ) at the moment. I just wonder whether the authorities have conducted proper enviromental impact studies on the area as Bansko in particular is just one mad scramble of development. In addition they are bdding for the winter olympics and there is talk of massively increasing the linked ski area.
