My phone has dual SIM slots and my normal SIM is now pricey for Europe. Are there any decent PAYG which provide reasonable data and phone in Europe . I will be in the dolomites and probably going to France later in the year.

Three do data-only SIM, 24GB for £45 for 24 months. It also works in Switzerland.
Can also be quite handy in the UK when your normal SIM has no reception.

Tesco? Uses O2 network so no extra charge for Europe.
Of course if those irritating Brexiters hadn't messed things up, any provider would be good.

Plusnet Mobile do cheap SIM only deals on 1 month contracts, which include roaming (including both Switzerland and Andorra).

Not sure you will find an E-sim on PAYG and any »cheaper » deals on pay monthly will almost certainly not be available on E-sim contracts, also all providers who assured everyone that brexit would not affect European services are simply liars, but what’s surprising about that?

Take a look at "lefrenchmobile". we used their PAYG sim for a while.

Smarty piggyback the three network.
The sims are commitment free, so you can buy 1 month then cancel.
As data fair use overseas is 12gb, it would cost about £8 for a sim

This what I use. £10 per month for 40Gb ( UK data ) which gives 12Gb per month in the EU. I already needed the sim for holiday use in the UK so it works out perfectly for me. One thing to note , you can only do 60 days consecutively roaming. PM me for a link and you can get a month free.

I took one of these out for my son last week. £7 per month 30 day contract, no roaming fees throughout europe, unlimited minutes and texts and 12gb of data.

If you get a giffgaff sim still has roaming included and you could just buy a "goody bag" for those months you need it. We use them now instead of contact and love we that we can up or reduce our monthly payment as life changes.

Could consider porting your normal SIM over to o2 so that you don't have to pay for an extra SIM?
I pay £9 per month for 30GB on o2, free roaming in Europe still included. Limited to 25GB use while actually roaming, although I never use anywhere near that.
o2 claim they won't introduce EU roaming fees. I know that all networks said it initially, but o2 now have a USP among the main networks with free roaming being retained, so it could make good financial sense for them to keep it free.
It could even lead to other networks making it free again if they lose too many customers to o2 as travel increases again.

I have a French prepaid sim from SFR, 20 euro for 20 gb.
French simcards with a plan unfortunately require residency in France, otherwise they are a lot more enticing!

Do you really need residency ? Not just an address ? I seem to remember having to email a copy of a utility bill and my passport when I had a french orange sim.

I have Red by SFR contract sim, set up with no proof of anything. The initial payment for the sim itself though (about €5) had to be made with a French debit card. I just used a friend's.

This.
I can't see the point in a foreign (e.g. French) SIM card when (UK) Giffgaff do the job perfectly well. They're also one of the cheaper UK PAYG SIM cards anyway.
Only thing is they don't do Switzerland (just get pre-paid Three data mobile SIM...)
Top tip: Android phones with dual SIM have 'Switch data card' shortcut on the pull-down settings menu. So you can switch SIMs (data) quickly, if say, you're transiting via GVA.

People have been caught out in the past by Switzerland not being covered in many of the roaming agreements. It's why I highlighted that roaming on Plusnet does include Switzerland.
