Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

They sold down stock of cars during initial pandemic low trading to shift cash around, then expecting to buy more new vehicles as business shifted upward. Vehicle production now seems to be a problem with chips unavailable, result is severely restricted supply (especially at reduced cost they'd usually pay to populate fleet) and onto not having enough vehicles to rent now. Doubt it'll change this season.

If second hand prices were the same in Europe as they were in the UK then that was probably a very good business decision.

So : What happened in 2016 to cause the £ to crash ?
Since then it has never been close to 1.3 euros = £1.

Like it or not Brexit has made everything priced in Euros more expensive.
In addition to that insurance costs for non-EU drivers have also gone up as result of brexit.

Yes - car hire prices are also a supply issue as result of covid (as I mentioned and you observe).
However lets not sweep facts under the carpet because they are politically inconvenient.

@Haggis_Trap, yes, agreed if the pound was at the same level as it was in 2016 then things would be cheaper. However, my assumption is that when the OP is talking about the price of hire cars, he's doing it in comparison to 2021 or 2020 - at least that's the case when I'm talking to my friends/family about how much car rental prices have gone up.

For sure - a covid break of 2 years means that many hire car companies simply sold off their fleet.
As result of covid (semiconductor shortage) new cars now in short supply.
Plus travel industry has been decimated.

Crazy prices in Austria; £764 for our trip in Austria for a group B car and switched to Italy when EJ cancelled our flights. Cost in Italy - for a Group N car with snow tyres (only small 4x4 have them as standard in Italy, apparently) from Avis - £106.

Last few holidays we've just used transfers and taxis when needed, much cheaper than (for example) £800 for some rusty tin can on a Greek island.

It's even making ski transfers look cheap right now...

Yep. They are staggeringly expensive at the moment.

I'm seriously considering a much cheaper flight and rental into somewhere a bit further away like Marseille or Milan. Potentially saves £100s (even with tolls and fuel) if you don't mind another hour or so on your journey.

I'd like to see your figures/analysis of the impact of Brexit on non-EU drivers rental car insurance that drives up overall prices we are seeing, is it a big impact? Certainly the 3P insurance I buy to cover rental car excesses specifically when renting in Europe has not gone up to any degree which if you were correct I would expect to see a big hike with that insurance too.

- Brexit has made £ weaker
- Insurance charges for non EU drivers also higher.
- Covid also had huge impact on car hire / travel industry

Feel free to Google and add numbers if you wish! Got better things to do with my time.

@Haggis_Trap, it was your premise that brexit increased the cost, surely you should be able to back it up? Why does brexit increase non-EU drivers insurance that the rental car cos charge? If there is nothing to back it up then we can dispense with that proposition.

I thought £300 pw wasn't too bad - but there are 4 of us, so it makes the transfer cost comparable.
However, I have a car booked for half-term ex-GVA and tried to cut it down from 7 days to 5 days, to be told that would cost £150 more...crazy!

@Haggis_Trap, It's gone up for everyone in Europe not just us Brits. Car hire costs in the UK have also increased significantly.

Did Brexit make the pound weaker, who knows? If you could predict the currency markets you wouldn't be worried about £300 car hire.

Just to add I voted remain too Toofy Grin

Uhhhhm : Look at the exchange rate plot above rolling eyes
Anything you buy in Euros is ~10% more expensive (compared to pre 2016 when UK shot itself in foot).

How has Brexit affected the value of sterling?
Since the Brexit vote in 2016, the exchange rate of the pound against other leading currencies has fallen significantly. This seems to reflect a generally negative outlook among international investors for the UK’s economic prospects outside the European Union.

Yip : No doubt covid had played a role (as discussed in my first post)
Car hire companies sold off their rental stock and semiconductor shortage means new cars are in short supply as demand picks up.
For Brits a weak £ simply adds to those problems.

It's not necessarily a straight decision to sell them, more that it's intrinsically part of the trade and usually unseen by the customer.

Broadley, buy in mass from manufacturing (planned build and overstock) to hire fleet, out at 9 months (gives second hand cars at less than a year old) into trade affiliates (same brand dealership of that car) or possibly to sub sector hire co. Ultimate disposal through auction house to second tier dealer stock. It's an ongoing conveyor on which if you stop the supply it comes to a halt and depends on who is left sitting on which chair.

Covid absolutely stalled the model anyway, so stock sitting unused and coming up to it's 9 month cut in cycle terms, with no business do you let them go, yep, do you commit to the new batch, erm I'll get back to you on that one mr manufacturer, can we push payment back ? Yippee, covid has finished-ish maybe, I'll take the new batch, oops we've sold them into 1st tier dealer at better unit cost. Can we have some more please, sorry mate it's the chips you see, they're gonna cost you, sucking of teeth heard, ok what about any quantity you can spare, how much ?

Meanwhile over in hire central financial, "3 items for sale and one customer, price goes down" "1 item for sale and three customers, price goes up" is being implemented. That's at both ends of the transaction, it's really only a business after all.

I've just rented a Compact (Golf) in Verona airport for HT week 7 days for £136, so the supply can't be an issue there.

Maybe it's just a bit of old fashioned profiteering from the Austrians & Swiss while they've got a good excuse.

I would keep looking as prices seem to fluctuate massively on a day to day basis (Malpensa as my sample). We booked 6 days, estate car for £300 back in October, I've re-booked twice since and now on £128 with various waiver cover included. On that day I saw an Opel Crosslander for £36 for an off terminal pick up!
