Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski school Italy, advice for Down syndrome teenager

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We are looking for a Ski school/ resort in Italy for a teenager with Down syndrome who last skied 3 years ago. Now aged 14 , She was then sking very basic Parrell turns and doing easy Blues. She has had a combination of Ski school and private Lessons, She seems to learn best when in a (younger) group and some private lesson to support.
We have flights booked to Verona for the end of January to Verona and looking resort with a good ski school and which also has access to a large ski area for us parents.
Advice appricated on which ski school / area may best suit our needs, Do skischools do full day ski school or combination of ski school and creche.?

We have had a nice experience in Pila with the ski school there where we did a combination of group and private lessons ( very affordable compared to France) for our kids, lovely understanding instructors, very patient ( my kids have some additional needs) they also had afternoon crèche but it might be for younger children ( mine where 5 and 8 at the time, l think the 8 yr old may have been the oldest in crèche)

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thank you Bella2015 . Understanding instructors is the main element to get right. Italy tends to be very child freindly. We are flying into Verona so Pila is a long transfer. We were hoping to keep tanfer short, somewhere on or near the Dolomities.
We are also concered that there will be no group lessons for children at the end of January due to covid.

Good luck @omas brumm, yours is a very specific need and I hope there is some Snowhead with personal experience of a good instructor to recommend. There is no reason why your daughter can't get a lot of pleasure from skiing, but it does need the right instructor and general environment. Especially after missing a couple of years. From my slight knowledge of the Dolomites I would suggest Corvara where there are a lot of blue run routes to build confidence, but I have no knowledge of the instructors there.

However my experience of instructors elsewhere is that they will be very keen to support your daughter. It would probably be a good idea to spend a bit of money on international phone calls and speak directly to the ski schools, I think with advance understanding they would put a lot of effort into identifying a suitable instructor. Private lessons are key. If you leave it too close to the time they may have less flexibility.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Corvara/Colfosco is lovely with easy progression slopes. Didn't have any lessons but saw plenty of ski school kids around and about and on the lifts including an instructor with a young girl on a private lesson. All the kids looked happy, engaged and I was really impressed with the instructors and their approach.

Sauze d'oulx would be a 3hr transfer, but we found James at Sauze Online to be super helpful when booking ski school for one of my children a few years ago (not disabled but epilepsy/seizures are an added complication so we are really careful with our research before we choose a ski school). There were a few ski schools available and a good resort with access to the whole of the Val Lattea.
