Totally. If I go to a cafe, it’ll be outdoors. We won’t be sampling any apres, we’ll just takes beers to the flat and play Mario kart and mortal Kombat. Masks on in any busy spots.

I suspect our trip to Tignes will be a little flat, most likely it will be a few us sat around a table in the hotel bar.
I have a feeling Italy will be the same but I'm not that fussed as long as I get to the mountains.

(This is at the tiny ski area of Romme) Wednesday we were extra quiet, all the local primary school kids had been told to keep away from others if possible, Thursday we were closed and so was school. Friday afternoon we have half the local kids that show up Wednesday or weekend because school is closed and 1/2 tested positive. Be careful out there.

We've just cancelled our trip to La Tania on 23rd Jan - France may be open now but with a sudden surge of Brits into the resorts that will only mean one thing. You're pretty much guaranteed to catch Covid skiing in France in the next few weeks. For the vaccinated that isn't going to be an issue 99% of the time. However for those of us with jobs that can't be done from home, this is a deal breaker.
We're re-booking for early March.

You know it makes sense.

Of the 7 families I know that went out to France at Xmas, 5 of them got COVID - in some cases just one or two members, in others, the entire family.
This has partly driven my decision to drive this Feb - I've flown every time previously for c. 15yrs, but it's hard to fly home when someone tests positive.

@snowdave, that's bizarre. What were they doing? We've all been happily going on as usual, extended families out before and for xmas and new year, quite enough socialising, visiting, skiing, etc., and no-one caught it, a fair few colds mind you!

I’m not sure you are meant to drive home if someone tests positive? Or are you a Mr D Cummings?

we were in Chamonix for 3 weeks over Xmas/ NY, returned home last week. Didn’t catch covid or even a cold. Plenty ways to mitigate risk of catching it - eg minimise time indoors in public settings.
Didn’t find lift queues or gondolas/ cable cars an issue even mixing with unmasked folk.
We drove out to keep options open for return.
I would be back out like a shot if I didn’t have to work until Easter.

Let's face it, countless people are either not going to take a test when they get cold symptoms in resort, or they're going to travel back while knowingly positive. Without wishing to virtue signal - it's just a personal choice - I have cancelled two long-anticipated trips rather than do that (and for a very specific reason, I can't risk getting stuck in resort.) The requirement to test might just as well be abolished at this point.

I don't get this. If you're guaranteed to catch covid (you aren't), then why on earth would it magically be fine in 6 weeks time?

It's quiet season so we are shut Tuesday and Thursday. Most resorts have some lifts closed due to staffing issues in general and made worse due to Covid + everywhere is very dead even considering it's mid January.

Work in NHS, knowingly exposing ourselves to the risk of having to isolate right now would not sit well with us ethically.
The situation will change in March - both in terms of the prevalence of Omicron and also the staffing pressures in work.

Normal stuff - no particular partying etc. Not all in Cham - various places, but all families with kids, so unless they brought it from the UK (possible in one case) then it was local transmission.
My understanding is that at least one of the Chamonix schools shut early before Xmas because there was so much COVID that it wasn't practical to stay open. You will probably know more on that front than me!
@NE1, no need to test if you're driving home.

@Hurtle, It's correct one only has to do a test upon return to the UK. It has to be a test booked in advance as the test number is required for the locator form to gain entry to the UK. I had better be correct or I'll be stuck in Calais next week
(As long as fully vaccinated and have uploaded vaccine status to Eurotunnel website)

Pre-departure tests have been abolished (apart from a limited set of circumstances that don't apply to us).

@Hurtle, Sorry no idea. I think... its a 7 day quarantine until you test negative. I guess most Brits will simply get home one way or another spreading Omicron as they go.

Precisely the point I was making. Brits will be ignoring that and swanning around regardless, potentially infecting French people (unless they hermetically seal themselves in their cars until they reach the UK.)

Well, your post saying that there's no need to test if you drive home seems to imply that the French laws won't apply to you, unless I've misunderstood you.
