Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Guidebook and guide for Zinal

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Does anyone have a recommendation for an off piste or touring guidebook for the Zinal / Grimentz area?

Any recommendations for local Mountain Guidea? Not Graeme Frost, he is busy that week Smile

Thanks in advance.

@brownie, I think Nick Park is based in that valley - but personally I wouldn’t ski with him again (pm if you want reasons)

Guidebooks - Swiss Alpine Club series are excellent, and the SwissTopo maps also have most of the detail of the SAC books printed on the reverse side, with routes themselves overlaid on the map.

(By the way, I think we skied together on Flegere last Saturday before your flight home, if you are who I think you are… it was our first day and your last)

This map the best information source I know for Zinal & Grimentz. Can figure out most of the routes : which is part the fun? Especially somewhere quiet and off beaten path

Surprised to hear of a problem with Nick Parks - I have skied with him quite a few times with no problems. He also seems like a really nice guy.

If you are just looking for some day trips, try Ski Zenit (skizenit.ch). They have guides qualified for off-piste excursions, some of them live in the valley, and I would rate their safety standards as outstanding. Stefano is one of the owners and as well as having a wealth of experience of the valley is a brilliant guy to spend time with. There will be some routes/areas they cannot cover so depends what you are looking for.

I like Stefano at Zenit also. The full list of local Guides is here: https://www.guides-anniviers.ch/presentation/.

Not all of them are active/winter available.

In terms of the list Romain Tavelli is also a good guide and used to working with UK clients.

Just to add that Swisstopo is available online and is free. The main ski touring routes are marked sufficiently accurately if you feel that you can assess them etc. I am probably there quite a bit in January if you need a steer.

Romain Tavelli is probably the best skier I have ever skied in. His skills in the woods were mindblowing and we really had to work hard skiing with him. He is a local from Valais and also has a «civilian» job.

Really a professional guide.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations, very much appreciated.

Hopefully , the COVID rule gods permitting, will be heading to Zinal in 4 weeks. Will buy the maps, contact a guide in a coupe of weeks when the travel stuff looks a bit clearer
