Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi All,
All being well i am planning on Flying in to Lyon in March and renting a car, would like to be able to fit our groups rental skis in on the way.
Has anyone any experience on the size of car would be required. I was looking at a Mokka or equilient.
Thanks
Jason

@jason.peter1986, how many people in your group? And when you say, "fit our groups rental skis in on the way" do you mean all the way from Lyon, or just in resort?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@mgrolf, there are 3 adults, would be picking them up somewhere in the resort just our apartment isn't a walk from the shop like usual

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@jason.peter1986, I think you will be fine, as long as the car has a split fold rear seat. Fold one half down, skis go that side. If it doesn't then you may need to get creative, e.g. recline the passenger seat as far as possible, put skis in front footwell, squeeze 2 adults in the back.

You'll need to Register first of course.

Passenger seat usually works quite well for short journeys, seatbelt to secure skis

Just a note that you often don't get the model of car specified at the point of booking - just the same category.
We have found that (for 2 people) the Economy (second smallest) class of car is sufficient to fit skis, but the Mini (smallest) class probably isn't

We've used small estates for exactly this situation and it worked well. Usually not a pricey as an SUV to rent and with one side of the split seat down, the skis can lay flat and there's loads of room still for luggage.

Four of us have hired many a Corsa (or equivalent) over the years and fitted the skis down the middle of the car.
3 of you will be able to fit skis, one way or another, into any hire car.

Skoda Octavia or similar always a good option

no problem at all - do 2 trips if needed.

You know it makes sense.

An estate car is best, but most hatches have the split fold rear seat that allows enough length to poke through diagonally, unless you're renting some old school 210s!!
I've had 3 big guys in an Opel Crossland (small SUV similar size to Mokka) plus 3 sets of 170-ish skis.
Just need to watch those sharp edges on the car interior though!
