Good luck, unfortunately I don't drive so I'm reliant on either public transport or reliable transfers, I might consider a tour op and move my flights to March instead, hmmmm.... Been a while since I went to the Dolomites, as a boarder I'd really like to try Laax though, I'm not aware of any tour ops that go there. |
We are using Alps2Alps for the transfer, ok we are going to pay a lot more on the transfer but …. We hoping we get to ski!

Case numbers in France aren’t relevant to border closures really - the bonkers UK ban was to do with omicron, of which there’s now oodles in both countries.
Positive signs in London that both cases and hospitalisations have peaked, which will hopefully be reflected in the rest of the country within a couple of weeks.

Laax probably one of simplest resorts for a DIY ski trip and tour op not needed at all. Fly to Zurich and easy CH public transport directly to the resort. Lots of accommodation from modern edgy hostels to very nice apartments right by the cable car. I’ve done it many times to both Laax and neighbouring, more rustic, Flims.

For the Champoluc trip above how are you flying to Geneva then transiting through France to Mt Blanc tunnel without breaking their entry ban?

I am assured there is a route which adds about 30mins (mentioned in Italy thread), I am however VERY much hoping the essential reason list will include transit! We aren’t going until 19th Feb

They could cross at the St Bernard pass from CH to Italy arriving in Aosta. There is a tunnel at the pass keeping the route open all year round.

Might have been me - I know for our trip, we're flying into Geneva and then driving to Italy via Switzerland, without hitting France. I'm not driving so have no idea of the route, so may be the one that Ozboy mentions.

I have seen one or two stating similar on this thread.
That makes absolutely no sense to the travel ban on UK tourists, if this was a reasonable premise, then why are Danish tourists or those from the USA acceptable?
I suspect - as UANN has mentioned - that the tourism ban will fizzle away in a week or so.

Surely the opposite is true?
What's the point in banning us when COVID is even more rampant in France than it is here?
Germany removing the ban, and the UK removing most travel testing requirements this week shows logical policy making - there's no point in these kinds of travel restrictions when COVID (Omicron) is rampant everywhere.

Is it not about reducing the peak load on hospitals (which includes skiing)? The British are the politically easiest customers to block and achieve this. I read somewhere (here?) that ICU is nearly full in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.
I suppose the flaw in that argument is the VOC line used to originally justify it.

91% ICU capacity in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes. It was 40% a month ago. The curve is flattening, however.

It was discussed much earlier on in the thread, but I’ll repeat it regardless, but the relaxation on return to UK tests and other countries dropping restrictions just means Brits will go elsewhere.

Brits make up by far the biggest non domestic tourism.
By blocking the biggest market makes it less strain on any health services. Imagine how difficult it would have been in some places getting a fit to fly home test? (maybe that requirement being dropped may see softening from FR)
Less queuing at lifts, etc. Less demand for hospitality. Makes it easier for establishments to follow the rules as demand does not outstrip supply, etc. making it easier to police.

But that’s ok for the majority right? Even good. The market adapts to overcome etc.
I do however feel pretty bad for the people who own property in France, or who have long standing links to particular areas. These are likely also the tourists who contribute most to the social life/society in ski towns.
A bit like losing the Erasmus scheme, these little nibbles at freedom of movement are most painful for those who were genuinely interested in being European.
It will pass I suppose

@robs1, agreed -although I'm sure pressure will be applied from businesses heavily reliant on Brits for HT. Without them, or support from gov, I suspect many may struggle.
I'm tentatively eyeing up 5th March now and hoping things will have peaked and post HT they may relax things.

@robs1, I am not convinced that restricting the uk market makes a huge difference overall. It's 13% of the normal market and over xmas ny certainly much of that was made up by holiday hungry europeans.
