Poster: A snowHead

Hi guys
We had a short break with friends planned to Innsbruck from the 10th December for five nights - were planning to mix city break with the Christmas markets etc and one or two days at Hintertux. Obv with Austria going back into lockdown that is going to be off the table so we are looking at alternatives. Any ideas? We were considering two days in Barcelona and then travelling on to Grandvalira but maybe there are better options. Have done pre season at Chamonix before and it was good but definitely a 100% skiing trip, this time maybe we'd prefer to have some other non ski options.
We're all fully vaccinated and don't mind doing PCR/lateral flow etc. Not too focused on budget but don't typically ski in Switzerland.
Any suggestions warmly received!

@belette, Courmayeur opens 27 Nov (apparently, although not sure about snow, might arrive just in time).
More confidently, as we nearly went over tonight, but not full opening this weekend, Monterosa opens for the season 3 Dec and looks they have enough snow to open fully tomorrow, had they got their act together
Champoluc has an apparently very nice spa. Plus Italian restauration. What's not to like?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Interesting, have done Champoluc at Christmas before but with a tour operator so we didn't see as much of the town as we would have done with a DIY option. I remember the skiing being nice and quiet! Plus a shorter transfer which would be a bonus as the Grandvalira option is almost 3 hours from Barcelona so maybe not great for a short break.

Considering flying to Malaga, basing ourselves in Grenada and doing one or two days at Sierra Nevada ski centre...anyone got any words of wisdom? Looks pretty barren at the moment but obviously snow conditions change quickly at this time of year.

Lyon + Tignes.
Lyon has a big winter festival (Fete des Lumieres) that weekend, then you can easily get to Tignes by train to Bourg Saint Maurice.
Lyon is also famous for food (even among French cities!). Really recommend it for a city trip.

The Dolomites are open by then. Stick with your flights to Innsbruck and just a 1.5 hr transfer

@belette - we’ve done a few christmases in Champoluc and they’ve been very pleasant.
https://ski-champoluc.com/ are now back in town offering Champoluc-only breaks in the Aosta.

Thirded!
Lyon is the gastronomic capital of France and Fetes des lumieres is one of the best times to see an already beautiful city at its absolute best.
Under normal circumstances, hotel rooms start booking out a year in advance, but I'd assume availability would be better this year.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@snowmonkey I don't think we are allowed even to transit through Austria, easyJet will refund the flight if the extension of lockdown is confirmed on the 2nd.
Lyon/Tignes looks good but 3+ hour train transfer maybe too long for a short trip...one of the advantages of Innsbruck is how close everything is together.
Bacqueira Beret looks good, could fly into Toulouse and hire a car...
I'm slightly worried about France and Italy also locking down if trend in cases/admissions continue hence why Spain is appealing. Doesn't seem to be taking off in the same way there!
