Family of 4, kids 12 and 15 booked pre Xmas trip to cervinia (17-23rd). Flying in and out of Malpensa and welcome any recommendations on car hire companies.
Initial research shows transfers to be almost double than car hire.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

We used to have a yearly trip to Cervinia / Valtournenche and I've used both Europcar and Sixt on numerous occasions from Malpensa no issues at all with either. Both conveniently located in terminal, I always go with the basic package and get an independent excess cover insurance, neither have tried to give it the hard sell or claimed any damage on return.
Only minor comment would be to check the snow chain size, I once got supplied a set that weren't compatible with the wheels on the car but I checked on pickup and the office quickly provided an appropriate set.
As long as your confident with driving in snow and using chains if needed I would recommend the car over transfers. Cervinia is high and open, we've had a few days that would have been lost to wind but were saved by an hours drive to Pila.

I generally find Ryanair cheapest for car hire, Im fairly sure snow chains are obligatory for any Italian Alpine airport
The cheapest cars on the list that RY will present to you , will be car hire cos , you are not familiar with ..The more expensive ones are Hertz , Avis etc
Avoid Firefly and Goldcar.
as mentioned above, get a car hire excess policy, this insures you against the excess you would pay in case of accident
If your hotel has a garage, park inside , so that your diesel does not degrade due to low temps
Having a car , gives you an option to stay in a satellite town a few minutes drive from a lift, meaning less expensive hotel
Of course make sure your car does not have any undocumented damage , before setting from the airport

@rinky75, we’ve used Hertz, I joined the executive club and paying with a MasterCard get decent rates, , we’ve had a Jeep, Audi Q5 and E class estate, all 4wd and winter tyres, all sub £200 for 8 days well I used to, this seasons looking much more expensive so far. I always take a video of the car on collection and return, and as other say have an excess policy via a link on Money Saving Expert. If your flying with EasyJet, only the big boys are at the terminal train station. Had to get the free bus to T2 in 2020 as they couldn’t supply a 4wd with winter tyres at T1, it took a bit longer but worth it IMO.
