Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Andy_Mac, where to where? And where on earth is Tirano?

Do you perhaps mean Chambery (Airport) to Livigno? Via Turin?

www.rome2rio.com is your friend.

Tirano is in Italy and is the nearest big town to Livigno (if that is where the OP is going).

Sorry guys -i always forget to put the detail Smile - Yeah I'm staying in Bourg St Maurice, and the route to Livignio seems to be Bourg > Chambéry Challes-les-Eaux > Milan > Tirano > Livignio - going to be a long day!

I think you will find that you need to take the Bernina Express into Switzerland and then get a bus over the pass see https://www.seat61.com/trains-and-routes/bernina-express.htm for details of how to get to Tirano from Milan. No idea where you would change onto the bus I guess maybe Poschiavo or maybe even the top of the Bernina Pass. Wherever it is the buses will run to time and wait for connections (as always in Switzerland) but even so this is a long trek. It is a very remote inaccessible spot, hence the "duty free" status. See www.postauto.ch for bus timetables etc.

@Andy_Mac, you might be better off getting over to the the Rhone valley via Chamonix. There will be reasonably straight forward connections on Swiss trains from Martigny to St Moritz.

The most convenient railhead for Livigno is not Tirano (IT), but Zernez (CH). There is a bus from Zernez to Livigno taking only 40 minutes (whereas from Tirano, you have to first take a bus to Bormio, then another one across a high pass (which I assume is cleared in winter) to Livigno.

Getting to Zernez from Bourg Saint Maurice in a day is quite the mission, but it is not impossible. You'd have to reach Geneva, then make your way across Switzerland via Zürich and Landquart. To cover the Swiss portion of the trip, make sure to buy a "Saver Day Pass" from the Swiss railways, 60 days in advance if possible, to make it affordable.

you've got a point there - i can get back to geneva late on the 15th and then do geneva to zernex the next day - looks easier than the milan route Smile Thanks mate!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Additionally, if you do decide to spend a night en route, rather than changing trains in Landquart for Zernez, if the weather is OK consider staying on the train all the way to Chur, changing there to Samedan, then Zernez. It'll take an hour longer perhaps, with an extra connection, but the Albula Railway between Chur and Samedan is truly breathtaking. And it all costs the same if you have a day pass.
