Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Poster: A snowHead
Just wondering if these seem about right to any ESF instructors out there:

Piou-Piou == Premier Ski

Beginner
Ourson & Flocon == Level 1

Intermediate
1*, 2*, 3* == Level 2

Advanced
Etoile de Bronze, Etoile d'Or == Level 3

"Expert"
??? == Level 4

@Evasion, I think the child "Expert" level would be "Competition".

 Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Mrs WoC works for ESF, they have books on it in the office explaining all the various stages, but for a reasonable summary I think this site is ok :

@rjs, thank you. The reason I'm not sure about whether there is an equivalence at the highest level is that Competition seems to be entirely racing on groomed slopes whereas Level 4 for adults seems to focus a lot on off-piste.

 Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Evasion, competition (at least in Chamonix/Argentiere) spends less time racing than on other skills, typically there's only 1.5-2 days of racing. There's a lot of off-piste, bumps etc., and even the shooting part of biathlon sometimes for a bit of variety.

And in Samoens Competition is basically what it says on the tin - my 10yrs old girl spent two weeks with the local ski club racing. Half of the time was spent on the slalom course and the other 1/2 on a different prepared GS course. There was extremely strong emphasis on technique and speed. She found that all local girls and boys, while generally welcoming were super competitive. To make it even more complicated, Competition, at least in Samoens has Bronze, Silver and Gold levels within, based on your timing and instructor report. We got to Silver, but she is not heavy enough to compete with the teenagers for gold, hence this season, fingers crossed, she will be doing Freestyle. In order to do Freestyle, you need to have done at least Etoile d'Or and be 10yo+...

ESF doesn't condone Freeride lessons for kids younger than 13yo, because while technically they could manage pettty much anything even at the age of 10, the likelyhood of them not following orders by the guide or becoming an extra liability when a situation arises are quite high. The latter statement was given to me by a friend, who is a guide with ESF and leads their adult freeride courses...
