Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I plan to drive to Corvara from Calais this January. I’ve not driven this route in winter. What is the best way? I have winter tires & chains. Also, I would be looking to stop say 2/3rds of the way. Any suggestions would be greatly accepted.

My preferred route to Northern Italy is Calais, Dunkirk, Lille, Luxembourg (fuel stop at Schengen), Pirmasens, Stuttgart, Ulm (we overnight at a place called the Engel in Lehr, a northern suburb of Ulm), Fernpass, not the motorway to Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass (€10 toll). I would then turn east at Bressanone as far as just before Brunico and then south to Corvara.
NB - the Fernpass (southbound) on a Saturday has flowcontrol by trafficlights at Reutte which can cause tailbacks as far as the tunnel at Füssen in high season and there is no easy alternative. Once past the trafficlights the traffic flows well.
Fuel is cheapest in Luxembourg (hence Schengen). In Austria (but not on the motorways!) it's cheaper than in Italy.
Others will tell you that the Fernpass is horrible - you pays your money and takes your choice!
In summer several years ago we left Dunkirk at 7 o'clock ish and got to northern Lake Garda for dinnertime.
