On the back of the thread about requirements for skiing in France, I know that there will be some requirement for face coverings in lift queues and in gondis etc - which is fine and understandable.
I recall that there was some chat previously about what constitutes a proper face covering, does it need to be a surgical style mask (which will be a PITA).
Anyone on the ground know if there is anything more permanent (perhaps like a buff?) which would be acceptable to the lifties, specifically in France?

@GreenDay, other than in gondolas and cable cars I shall start off by trying just my very high collar - it goes higher than the bottom of my goggles so certainly won't be obvious.
Masks on chairlifts are contagion theatre.

@under a new name, Yep, I get that - and dont disagree.
I just wondered if there was some invention that could be worn which may be both practical and allowable............in the Tignes pages for Covid requirements they show pictures of happy skiiers with buffs up.
Genuinely unsure what diff a wet and minging "surgical" mask will make !!
eta - this is the page I refer to - https://en.tignes.net/informations-covid-19

I think (perhaps this can be confirmed by Austrian based sHs) that at the moment in Austria the masks worn in gondolas and cable cars have to meet the FFP2 standard.

@GreenDay,
Having already done the whole masked skiing thing for a year already, for the most part it really isn't a big deal. Sure, would be nice not to have masks, but thats not the way things are.
I have one of these https://www.outdoorresearch.com/us/protective-essential-lightweight-ubertube-kit-283649 and it worked well, and is actually a much better neck gaiter than my normal neck gaiter.
Also no issues with a wierd goggle tan!
We do however get some unformed snow every now and again - that was even less fun in a mask. I also think it renders them not so effective, but still probably better than nothing, and we got through almost the whole of a season of skiing

@stuarth, Thanks, that looks decent............I guess the next question is - will French lifties accept that or demand a "real" mask ?

Yes FFP2 masks on all public transport in Austria (ski lifts are categorised as public transport). FFP2 masks also required for supermarkets (and all shops in Salzburg currently).
Having used masks on public transport, shops, lifts, etc. since April 2020 I can confirm it really is no big deal. People are quite used to it.

@GreenDay, not convinced that @stuarth's idea will be any more recognised by any random liftie as anything more than a Buff(TM) ... certainly the Swiss in at least one resort last year seemed happy with buffs, at least from mid-Feb till end of season.

Last year Les Gets / PDS were saying normal " buffs " would not be acceptable but they were selling their own branded ones they would accept. Mine were waiting in my post box when I arrived this summer. Look decent enough. Just checked the Les Gets website and found masks and buffs
https://www.lesgets.com/en/practical-information/shops-and-services/official-merchandising/
it does say that masks will be obligatory in lift queues and on all lifts.
Not quite sure how a liftie is going to decide which face coverings pass or fail but my thoughts were get local branded ones and should just get waved through

@under a new name,
The definition of mask was fairly loose here! There were even people wearing those ski masks with the mouth hole!
That said, we collectively muddled through it. For the most part people were fairly thoughtful and compliant.

@stuarth, saw the snow camps guy on FB doing it the other day. He simply put the mask on before the helmet. Mask stayed on his face on the loft, then put under his chin when sliding. Seems simple enough.

@Timmycb5,
Depends on the mask. Like I said I did ski with an N95/kn95/ecan95 mask quite a few times.
Here face coverings were mandatory on lifts, gondolas, and in the lift line, but you could if you wanted take it off skiing down. But I'm also saying with a proper mask, that is a bit of a faff as an n95/ecan95 mask has straps that go round the back of your head, so I left it on skiing too.
That was not really an issue.

@stuarth, did your goggles not steam up? Mine did on chairlifts.

@under a new name,
Not really. As well as the bendy metal nosepiece, the gaiter thing has a draw-string which also forms ear loops, that seemed to do a pretty good job of sealing things up enough.

@Timmycb5,
ok, but I'm in Canada so it's a KN95 (or in my case an N95/ecan95 which have head straps as opposed to ear loops)
...and I wasn't watching a video of someone else.

In CH It needed to be a surgical mask - buffs weren’t accepted. But to be honest now they aren’t even enforcing masks on (4 man) gondolas even though the signs are still there. Suspect it may tighten up for the Winter given the expected large numbers of skiers

@stuarth, fair enough. There must be a workable solution though. Could you use create some sort of clip so you can unclip the mask when sliding?

@Timmycb5,
I did initially think about having something like that, but it turned out it wasn't a big problem for me skiing with it on so didn't bother in the end.

It’s been a requirement here all winter. I don’t usually wear a helmet but on the odd occasion that I have I’ve put a small biner on the straps over the ear pads and just attach the mask with shortened strap to those. Doesn’t stay on the face too good but keeps the lifties happy and easy to get off when needed.

@Oleski, Again, that looks ok...............although I am not sure what makes it any more "anti covid" than any other buff I currently own.
I guess for me (and lots of others as we get into the season) the question will be what is actually required in different countries.
I am with UANN on the daftness of wearing a mask on an open lift in a howling gale in January tbqh.

C'mon this is SnowHeads - surely we must be baying for a Hestra one - very warm, but does require treating with leather conditioner 3 times a day.

Over here they did not get picky about what was covering your face, just that it was. As I've said before, where you go has a lot to do with the level of compliance...and enforcement. It is not uniform, but it is somewhat predictable.
I tried several masks before arriving at one that was not really a bother. For me, bigger helped. Fogging was a problem, of course. Physics in your face!
(And I am apparently the only person who has never put the goo on my Hestra gloves, and they look great after four seasons. Mine are goatskin)

Somehow, I never quite got the hang of how to use the resort's buff as a mask.
Although I never seemed to suffer from my glasses getting steamed-up.

Someone on here last season suggested sewing a surgical mask onto the front of a buff, as a liftie approved but practical solution. It seemed like a good idea to me...
