Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@newcyjohn, sadly mine are firmly attached to my T5, but can recommend the Vredestein Quatracs.

I have 3 X 16x6.5 genuine VW T5 steels if you are interested?

@newcyjohn, if you struggle to find them secondhand, https://mytyres.co.uk will sell you a set on steel rims for about £140-160 per wheel for perfectly adequate tyres such as the Nankang Snow SV2 which have worked well for me on a Zafira Tourer, and they're delivered to your door or to a fitter of your choice. If you also need tyre pressure sensors, they can be pre-fitted and if necessary cloned locally to match those on your summer set, or you'll have to get a dealer or specialist to reprogram them each time you swap.

If you go with alloys, you'd better hope you never have to fit chains as they don't play well together - hence I have steel rims with plastic trims which get taken off if I have to fit the chains (twice in 8 years of driving to Austria at half term, both for the last 300 metres of steep access road to our accommodation).

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@ousekjarr, never had problems with using snow chains on alloys, but I can see it being an issue with ridiculously low profile tyres. My last 5 cars all had tyres with either a 50 or 55 profile, so plenty of rubber sidewall.

I put Michelin Cross Climates on my T5 Caravelle and have found them to be very good for trips to and from the Alps - haven't had to use chains and managed to get in and out of a very snowy "car park" with hills between levels La Plagne without any hassle. They also stay on all year so much less hassle all round
