Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Yorkshire visit - any advice please?

After enjoying their farming series on tv I’m treating hubby to a trip to canon hall farm near Barnsley.

I’ve never been north of the midlands and so would welcome any advice on places to stay in that area please. I’d like a pretty town with a couple of nice pubs and cafes ideally. If it’s nearer another or bigger town for more to do that would be great. Cheers

I'd have a look at Holmfirth, should suit the bill unless you have a pathological aversion to Last of the Summer Wine!!!

Hebdon Bridge is also nice but a bit of a trek from Cannon Hall.

Cheers holmfirth does indeed look good.

It’s already going to be a trek to get there for this long weekend so didn’t want to travel miles when there if possible so whilst Hendon bridge does look nice, as you say, a bit far really.

@bambionskiis, Holmfirth is a good shout.

Smaller village, about 12 miles east of Barnsley, on the road to Doncaster, is Hooton Pagnell. That might be worth checking out.

FWIW we also really enjoyed the Sculpture Park just outside Wakefield. Depends whether you like that sort of thing.

If you’re heading south back home, lots of Peak District villages that would fit your requirements.

Mrs a was in digs in Elsecar as a student with a great mining family. It was an active mining village in those days. I have not been there since, but I think that the Heritage Centre there would be worth a visit.

Notwithstanding the Moors Murders association, Saddleworth Moor has some good walks:

Just bear in mind Yorkshire was the biggest county in the country so they split it in 3... and one of those is still the biggest county in the country

@bambionskiis, you asked for feedback. If you’re committed to Barnsley area then I suggested you stay in Holmfirth. I’ve no idea what other people in Barnsley think - I’ll leave it with you, and not offer any further comment, crack on. rolling eyes

Rude I may well be, however, there are much better "Yorkshire" towns than Barnsley. As Markymark says ... a good few miles north! Try Harrogate, Ilkley, Skipton, Grassington, even venture up to Richmondshire.

Just be careful with the satnav you don't to end up back in the Midlands (newport pagnell) by mistake.

@adithorp, Yorkshire remains the biggest county.

The Ridings are administrative bodies, but the bounds of Yorkshire whole, are unchanged.

Fun fact - Saddleworth "in Oldham", is actually in Yorkshire - the county boundaries that put Saddleworth under the Greater Manchester administration remain.

I've had to forgive it the fact that it is on the wrong side of the Pennines and agree it's a great place.
We've been holidaying in Yorkshire for quite a few years now and are there at the moment, on the coast.
But there are many great areas they also have good beer and fish and chips.

Good point. Leaving Geneva once my friend insisted on entering 'Tignes' into the rental car satnav.
I went along with this, though I knew the journey like the back of my hand.
'Turn right at the next roundabout' it urged. 'That's the wrong direction' I replied.
I went along with it again, thinking maybe a new fast circular road route had been built.
20 minutes at 80kph later I asked 'Are you sure this is right, we're still heading west?'
Turned out there's a Tignes (or something similar) on the west Atlantic coast.
Better to ask a local and get told 'I wouldn't start from here if I were you'. wink

Is there a Newport Pagnell in the Midlands as well as the one near the M1 service station?

One thing I love about this forum is that people expand geography. Harrogate, Ilkley, Skipton, Grassington, or indeed Whitby are not near Barnsley.

I find that the closer you get to and the bigger the town the less there is to do. However since this is snowheads you could try the Castleford indoor snow centre. Anyway, my reccomendation for a place to stay near Barnsley is Penistone and explore the industrial heritage of the Don valley.

All a good few miles North of where the OP is wanting to visit. Not sure what accommodation like around Holmfirth but you could also try Penistone.

Have a walk around Cawthorne village whilst at Cannon Park it's lovely. My late wife introduced herself at first as from Barnsley but there's a world of difference when you go over the M1 and get to Cawthorne, it certainly is in gods own county!

@johnE,

Depends on your definition, it can either be classed as in the east, The east Midlands, the midlands. It's certainly not the south, but then again some people class everything north of Watford gap as the north.

Either way, there's a good chance you'll go through the proper midlands to get there.

Do they still serve a proper (at least I was told it was) yorkshire pudding - as a starter ladled with gravy? I would definitely go for one of them again.

As I suggested ealier there must be two Newport Pagnells The one I am thinking of is in Buckinghamshire which according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica is not in the Midlands
Quote:

Midlands, region of central England, commonly subdivided into the East and the West Midlands. The East Midlands includes the historic and geographic counties of Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and Rutland. The West Midlands comprises Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, and Worcestershire. Parts of the historic counties of Warwickshire, Worcestershire, and Staffordshire make up the metropolitan county of West Midlands. The West Midlands contains a heavy concentration of large industrial cities, including Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Dudley, Stoke-on-Trent, Walsall, and Wolverhampton. Parts of the region are rural, however, and agriculture remains economically important. Pop. (2001) 9,439,482; (2011) 10,135,069.

Its NUTS classification is UKJ13 UKJ refers to the South East of England.

Barnsley is not pretty town, the OP may just get confused with South Yorkshire conurbation as opposed to the Yorkshire of folk-lore. Maybe the OP would like the local delicacy "Barnsley Chop", inspired cuisine, not a pretty dish either!

@johnE, one and the same and I'm not disagreeing about it's official classification. Just a perception thing depending on your age and where you grew up and as it's only a couple of miles from the northants border. As I said above you'd still be almost certainly passing through the east midlands to get there. Unless you go down the A1 and then hang a hard right at Bedford.

Hard to disagree but cross over to the West of the M1, where Cannon Hall is and you're in to the South Pennines and there's some beauty there as well as in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors etc

Thanks for all your feedback guys. Sorted on holmfirth for our long weekend. Going to give the winery a look. Also I hadn’t realized there was a snowdome so we’ll give that a go too (we’ve been going to Tamworth so it’ll be nice to try somewhere different). The picturedome has also got some interesting options for the evening. I’m really impressed by how much there is to do in the area.

From experience I know it can be marginal to get outdoor grown tomatoes to ripen here, never mind grapes.
