Anyone know the date of the Men's downhill in Val d'Isere next season? Will it take place on the 9th December? I've tried to find the schedule for next season's WC races on the FIS site but couldn't find any info.

You need to wait until after the FIS Congress later this month, that is when the calendar is confirmed.

rob@rar.org.uk, Sorry, but there is no downhill in Val next season, it will be back in 2008 in february but on Bellevarde to try out the new course before the world championships in 2009

LARGEZOOKEEPER, really? Why is that? I can see the sense of switching to Bellevarde in 2008, but what's the reasoning for not having the Criterium de la Premiere Neige at Val d'Isere next season?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

rob@rar.org.uk, It's all been a bit dodgy with the weather over the past few seasons, there will however be a super combined (GS/SG) and I believe a GS for the men, girls will be as usual.

LARGEZOOKEEPER, if they're not running because of the possibility of poor snow conditions, will there be a replacement downhill somewhere else that weekend, or later in the season?

There's going to be a Super Combined (Downhill/Slalom) on Dec 10th and as I read it on the calendar, a separate Downhill on the 9th.
If that's the case, it's the same as last year.
The women have a downhill on the 16th and a SuperG on the 17th.

PG, thanks for the link. Has that timetable now been confirmed by the FIS general meeting?

It's the timetable as released by the FIS Council about five minutes ago, inbetween playing golf and generally enjoying the sunshine on the Portuguese coast somewhere

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

PG, yes, I thought it was a weird (and somewhat too warm) location for a wintersports general council! Good news about the DH at Val d'Isere - hopefully I'll be there for a bit of skiing and watching the race.

Nearly 1,000 representatives, delegates of some 65 countries for the various disciplines, all staying in classy hotels for a week in Vilamoura. Given the amount of money that filters down to the grass roots, it makes the expenditure on something like this rather obscene. Wonder what it all adds up to for that many people, the organisation, travel from all over the world, accommodation, etc etc etc.
As a French FIS delegate elect I suppose I could have gone, but I just couldn't justify it in our sector of the sport, given the lack of finance.

rob@rar.org.uk, oops, sorry they must have changed their minds, I'll try and do better next time

That early-season slalom in Finland is an interesting addition.

Martin Bell, yes, rumblings last season about the big gap between Soelden and Lake Louise I think.
Not the rule changes for the start order in Downhill, no, longer decided by finishing position in the final training session thank goodness, so none of that ludicrous braking by the top skiers to try to get a better bib number. Same as Super G now, current rankings of the top 30 decided the start order, hence no. 1 starts 30, etc.

PG, that seems to be a much more sensible way to determine the start order, and from a spectator's perspective will keep the tension building until the top 30 have all completed their run.
