Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

National Snow Show NEC Birm 23 24 Oct 2021

We booked advanced parking for £20 though had to buzz to get someone to raise the barrier!
Enjoyed the (free) show on the Saturday, got a toffee vodka headache, met Snow-Camp Charity friends, companion met a few of his ski-journo friends, I tried the nordic ski machine on the RAF stand, bought some flapjacks, talked to Michael Pettifer of MPI about ski insurance, booked an appointment with Colin re bootfitting. Was wishing someone would serve tartiflette instead of burgers. Realised the paper punnet of chips was £3.85. Companion bought us both some Falke ski socks. I would have liked to see more resort stands, especially Italy. It's a good start - hope it grows. I was looking for good base layers but didn't find any at the show. Nobody actually scanned our covid QR codes. We wore our face masks most of the time. Anyway, it was buzzy and friendly and I'm sure will be better next year.

That will be a real shame. We went there a few years ago and it was terrible. I suppose it is a lot cheeper for the organisers than the NEC.

Suppose it must be to do with the economics of running the event, but can't help thinking they are excluding a huge swathe of the UK population, who simply can't or won't bother with the logistics of attending.

It did sound like the battersea would be in addition to the NEC - kind of how it was in the good old years with a London and "Northern" event - I wonder if the organizers at the NEC have data on the % of attendees from London - its a huge population base of skiers - and I for one didn't make it up due to the stupid cost of train tickets.

I suppose that is why they compromised and moved it to a single show in the midlands. But you are right @barracuda, the cost of rail tickets is high and will deter lots of us from going to London. I can fly to Geneva cheeper than get the train to London. Perhaps Expo in Geneva would be a good place to hold it. Toofy Grin

Suppose it depends on which way you meant. By moving the venue to Birmingham, yes you make the event more accessible to the UK in general and increase footfall, but you're reducing the overall ability to attract the London audience who are, and I don't have the numbers, traditionally more likely to actually spend larger sums on higher value products and services on sale and display at the show, which makes it more 'valuable' to exhibitors who are ultimately the revenue generators for the shows creators when you're expecting to comp. 80%+ of door tickets.

Oh that was a treat

The lady at Starbucks wrote 'Hall' on Paul's cup.

She should have written 'Knob'

I was there on Sunday from 9:30 to 16:00 doing laps and every time I walked past his stand it was empty, with him on his phone.

He was very concerned about the COVID bubble, but he's living in one.

Thinks he's a lot more than he actually is.

Really full of himself for a host on a YouTube channel that has amassed a 'massive' 219 views for this episode with just 5 comments.

And more importantly hasn't even bothered to respond to any of those comments.

At 9.30 talking about the show
'
"somebody's book there, about how wonderful they are"

That somebody was Dan Egan, promoting his book '30 Year In A White Haze'

His talk was superb (which Paul didn't attend) and Dan is an icon and legend of the sport.

But obviously not to Paul.

Classic 'Monday Morning Quarterbacking'

Not a good thing to say about the show and the massive gamble the organisers took putting it on.

"We will be back"

I would say no thanks if I was the organiser.

I might have it wrong, but he does come across as quite a 'glass half empty' kind of person - the only things he seemed to enjoy were the english breakfast and the flapjacks. I can imagine him alienating most of his potential audience over the course of series of podcasts as his default seems to be to find the negative in everything. That said, I did listen to the end.

personally speaking as a Londoner, It didn't bother me being in Brum, me and my daughters made a weekend of it, we do lots of trips in to London when they visit me, so it made a change.

I hope it stays in the midlands as I believe it gives more people the option to go there.

Hopefully, it will grow bigger and better, with more exhibitors etc.

we all travelled by train, them from bath and me from London, I made a point of booking the train tickets as far in advance as possible, and I think all in it came to about £70. though, that was 1 adult, 1x 16/17 railcard holder, and 1x child

I listed to most of his podcast (I hadn't come accross him until he was mentioned here), until he got to the part about return travel he had to do as it didnt seem very relevant to the snow show.

I must say he was pretty negative all up (can't really think of any positives from him apart from it happened). Bizarrely he complained abnout its shortness but as if he hadnt known it was only two days when he booked his stand so i thought that was odd.

But apart from that it did sound like his negatives (if correct) were all relatively valid I thought and I can't vouch all happened - the parking charges are high there, the lack of kids friendly stuff was strange given if you can keep them not bored then parents get to stay longer, and the toilet issue was ridicuolus. The toliets didnt impact us as I guess we were lucky to only want to use them when there was no queue, but if those tiny ones just outside the show entrance were the only ones near to the actual show when they had larger ones in the hall that were closed as o/s then thats a poor effort to not have them operating.

Additionally I think the food choice and quality compared to the last shows in London was poor ,e.g. London had freshy cooked gourmet burgers/pizza/fries etc and not unreasonably priced, here we were served up cold (cooked in advance burgers wuth grill stripes I think were painted on), not hot enough to melt what passed for cheese in them, with some strips made to look like bacon at an apparent "gourmet" part of the outlets at the back. Other than those, the usual high street outlets outside the hall. Noit very appealling at all vs what has been on offer in the past.

It's interesting for someone in the industry to not be overly positive about it - at the very least you'd have thought it was the main opportunity for distinguishing themselves from competitors by personally engaging. Were there the usual number of studenty/6th form types there that are the fodder for these instructor course operators? It's refreshingly honest for them to admit they are f**ked at the moment for a UK customer base. Not sure the .is the best vehicle for promoting themselves - they come across as a pair of jokers or rather a straight man and a joker.

I didn't listen to the end but his attitude/style wouldn't encourage me to engage with his organisation and I won't be listening to anymore of his channel. It seemed weird to me that I was watching the studio while he kept refering to what was visible on his tablet. Was there another more useful version somewhere else which showed his pictures?

@Dave of the Marmottes, @tarrantd, yes i agree. It almost feels like we're party to a private conversation (a bit like the sort you may have at work with trusted colleagues in private, but you'd be a lot more diplomatic, balanced and constructive with any feedback in public). Comments like 'England haven't got a clue' and 'England is living in cloud cuckoo land' could surely be phrased better and more constructively, otherwise it'll just surely alienate potential future business.

Hi,

Just wanted to say it was great to meet everyone at the snowshow and I'm happy to answer any and all questions you've got about Fauna Skis.

As you might have pieced together or discussed with me first hand.
I, Alex, am the owner and founder of Fauna Skis. I designed, made my own prototypes and tested the skis across the alps and with the help of friends in Canada and NZ. After settling on the constructions, shapes and aesthetics of the skis I approached a factory in the Czech Republic, which specialise in wood veneer topsheets on skis and boards, to produce my skis. The first run was produced in early 2019, and have weathered the pandemic, getting by on international sales to places with open ski resorts like the USA and Aus/NZ, but now I am keen to engage more with the 'local' ski community in the UK.
Because I have the skis produced in a factory they are of a much higher quality than I could produce myself, are a much more accessible price than similar-looking skis and come with a 2-year factory warranty.

I am aware it's hard to judge a ski, especially from a new, unknown ski brand online and even in person and, it's why I'm keen to work with some of the indoor ski centres to organise ski demos and would be interested in getting involved with the forums' ski test events in the future.

I suspect that's artistic / marketing license and reflects the length of the slope start to finish, not the distance jumped Wink

So basically what they've had the past couple of shows.

Hope I'm wrong.

Interesting that the London Show is coming back.

Very expensive for exhibitors to do both shows (unless it's run by the same company as the National Snow Show).
