Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I want to buy a pair of Romp skis but have been quoted $250 shipping from the USA, does anyone know of how to do it more cheaply.

Thanks in advance

Fly to USA. Go snowboarding. Repeat until bored.
Buy skis, preferably shipped somewhere so as to avoid state taxes.
Return to UK, carrying skis in 23Kg allowance.

Ensure you do not forget to declare the skis on re-entry to the UK, and ensure you have a copy of the receipt in your wallet.

I think that's how it works, but possibly I forgot something...

@Specialk, Dimensions, weight and speed of delivery might help you get an answer, bare skis or bindings ?

Import duty from the US can kill the deal. Check carefully. I paid £14 duty on a £30 pair of mitts from the US for my daughter recently. Couldn't find them in the UK for less than £80 however.

Or take a pair of £20 skis off ebay with you and bring a new pair back and don't bother declaring them.

There are shipping consolidation companies like Stackry who have a very easy to use on line system.
You set up an account with them and this provides you with a US address for the supplier to ship to (a lot of US suppliers will ship free to US addresses).
Then Stackry onward ship the parcel to you in the UK.
A lot of our customers who buy car parts in the US use this to get them to the UK. It's not the quickest but it's really simple and cost effective I believe.

What you probably paid was £6 VAT (20%) plus an £8 handling fee. So on two pairs you would likely have paid £20.

Yep, and this is exactly the problem that is going to kill low value retail sales between UK & EU from here on in, handling fees and disbursements.

Sorry, thread drift I know. Embarassed

More on topic:

Base line pricing we pay to ship a pair of flat skis from UK to USA is £55 via FedEx Express (one/two days). I would assume the US ski company (or their retailer) should be able to access similar rates.

Once they land in UK expect to pay 20% VAT on the cost of the goods, plus a fee from those collecting (maybe £15'ish) plus maybe a small duty (not sure how much, if any, as we export not import).

To my knowledge there isn't and I've bought plenty of boards over the years. If you're lucky and find the said skis on US ebay you might be able to cut a deal on shipping but the duties make it pointless. If it's used then the seller can declare that it has minimal value but its too much hassle.
