At 1500euros it's a lot of ski carriage. Especially, when plenty of airlines offer free ski carriage anyway. The average person is never carrying their ski bag more than 5mins at a time anyway car to airport check in, arrivals to transport, transport to accomodation then return. Get a bag with wheels on and it's hardly a hassle even if you have to roll it a bit further (I'd argue that a regular ski bag with wheels is less pain to move around than that bag they give you with the skis that you are going to have to carry with all the rest of your ski gear in on your back.
There are probably a small number of people it would work for, for example someone that goes directly from their office to skiing all on public transport. However, for the majority it seems like they are kind of solving a problem that doesn't exist.
Would be interesting to know how they perform compared to a regular ski.

That had all but disappeared when I last flew with skis. Has COVID-world changed that?

I've not been flying since covid, but pre covid I always had free ski carriage with air Canada. From what I understand BA, Swiss, klm all offer free ski carriage. I'm sure none of the budget airlines do though.

Its not free on BA. A ski bag can be substituted for normal bag subject to size limits, but you are paying for the normal bag in the type of ticket.

You'll get to see more forums and be part of the best ski club on the net.

But presumably you would be paying for a bag regardless as will still be carrying all ski gear and fold up skis?

You would. I was just pointing out BA is not the free ski carriage unlike the Swiss model where I believe they will carry skis & boots free in addition to your hold bag.
