Just seen this sensationalist headline:
MAJORITY OF SWISS WANT SKI RESORTS TO CLOSE IF COVID-19 WORSENS
And the buried near the bottom:
Switzerland’s rate of cases is dropping faster than its alpine neighbours.
For many weeks it has had the highest number of coronavirus cases per head of population than the main alpine nations.
That has now changed.
It has 142 confirmed cases of the virus per 100,000 over a 7-day period.
It is 177 in France, 145 in Italy and 117 in Austria.
In the UK it stands at 301.
So perhaps the headline should be
SWITZERLAND'S RATE OF CASES IS DROPPING FASTER THAN ITS ALPINE NEIGHBOURS
PlanetSKI - how about some positivity from your scribes??

Remembering the enormous hostility from people in some parts of the UK (e.g. Cornwall), where rates were very low against "incomers" from other parts of the country that Swiss headline doesn't surprise me one bit. And they ESPECIALLY wouldn't want people from, say, the UK. Are you saying that the headline is not true, @colinstone? Presumably it's based on some kind of opinion poll?

Headline is true and from an opinion poll a couple of weeks ago. But rather contrary to "Switzerland’s rate of cases is dropping faster than its alpine neighbours."
Of course the Schadenfreuders enjoy hostility more

@colinstone, I'm guessing you read the article because the headline was "MAJORITY OF SWISS WANT SKI RESORTS TO CLOSE IF COVID-19 WORSENS" and you probably wouldn't have read it if the headline was "SWITZERLAND'S RATE OF CASES IS DROPPING FASTER THAN ITS ALPINE NEIGHBOURS".
I guess if not for you, for many others, the headline writer has done their job. Click bait.

Like Nick says, they get revenue from generating clicks, so the headline is designed to make outraged people click into it to load the page (they don't care if you read the article, they just want the ads to load and preferably for you to click on them).
It's also pretty accurate and understandable, in the scheme of things I wouldn't even say it's that sensationalised.

So sorry I'm confused - the headline is in fact accurate?
It doesn't feel in the least bit surprising to me that the majority of Swiss if they have a falling rate of infection would like to keep outsiders out from the chance of reintroducing the virus. Of course those in ski or tourist dependent places might feel differently.
Switzerland has been the outlier in European Covid "compliance" all season, for better or worse. It's a bit much in the middle of a pandemic to expect it to get the "everything is rosy in CH" treatment from external media.

>So sorry I'm confused - the headline is in fact accurate?
Accurate from a poll where the actual results can be, and are often skewed, by the way the questions are asked in polls. Depending on who is asking the questions!!
Whereas an actual fact is buried.
Boris Johnson skool of journalism - never let a fact get in the way of an interpretation.
It is touching how the contributors, who are normally a pretty questioning bunch, suddenly have blind faith in an unknown poll!!

*As a last resort if multiple dentists feels that's the only option. Fortunately they look fine, and in fact better than at the last check-up.

It's a nothing story in the scheme of things so not quite sure where the righteous anger comes from? I truly don't know the situation in CH and what we see is not that encouraging - various gripes about half of France flooding over an unmanned border to ski in Verbier, the Wengen social leprosy case. I guess it's pertient that a poll shows that non Swiss are not generally welcome in CH.
What story would you rather tell? Switzerland is fully open for skiing and everyone is welcome no matter from what country (subject to negative test, repeat negative test, 10 day quarantine at your own expense etc etc if you can even leave your own country)?

@colinstone, I don't have blind faith in it, I just accept that it's a clickbaity article on the internet and that is the era we live in. Next you'll be be shocked that the Daily Mail has a front page with something about the royal family on it.

The most clickbaity aspect of this is your heading for this thread. I just pointed out that the "non story" was perfectly credible given the hostile reaction, for example, of people in Cornwall to outside visitors during the summer. To suggest that this amounts to having "blind faith in an unknown poll" is rather silly; perhaps you should go for a nice walk?

In fairness, the Planet Ski headline is neither Sensationalist, nor Bait, It's factually correct - MAJORITY (55%) OF SWISS (over 15k surveyed so not an insubstantial sample, the sample quality maybe iffy - visitors to the media group's website respondents) WANT SKI RESORTS TO CLOSE IF COVID-19 WORSENS. (currently @ 142/100k)
Its certainly not as bad as the original 20m.ch article which headline translates as "A majority of Swiss ready to sacrifice the ski slopes". (
If you want to argue that the stats are made up - well, there's plenty of tinfoil in the drawer. That does make up a good %age of the comments on the original website, basically breaks down into 4 clusters; "Stats-Schmats, get a proper job", "Greedy Greedy Skiers", "WE DEMAND OUR FREEEEEDOM!" and "Burn the Heretics (i.e. people who don't agree with me)"
I think that pretty much sums up most online forums and comment sections at the moment.

@Richard_Sideways, How about "Almost half of Swiss are happy for ski resorts to stay open!"
Equally accurate, but not as "clicky" and emotion-charging, is it?

But yours is less accurate... You're saying...
"Almost half of Swiss are happy for ski resorts to stay open if COVID situation worsens!"
Now, about your emotionally charged statements?

how about
"PlanetSki reports on Swiss public COVID survey."

The point of a headline is not to summarise the article or tell the news at a glance, it is to make someone read the article, and that's it. That so many people these days don't understand this and take their news from headlines rather than reading full articles is to a symptom of what drives the clickbait headlines - the shorter the attention span the quicker that writer/editor/social media manager must pique your interest

To illustrate how media works, here are 2 tweets from Richard Osman;
"I was researched for 'Who Do You Think They Are?' but they found nothing exciting. I wasn't expecting royalty but I was hoping there might at least be a pirate or two."
"I guarantee that The Daily Express will turn this into one of their endless click bait headlines. 'Osman HEARTBROKEN at SHOCK family revelation'."
