Hi All,
More advice if possible please.
I'm 84 kg 5 ft 11 advanced getting more into the off piste. Ski around whitewater BC.
Went out today for an early morning tour, my skis are 184 120bent chetlers which I love. But we had a recent warm spell and it's now -18. Death cookies, tree bombs, powder and ice all on the same run. It was not pretty. I was skiing like Bambi, normally I drive them well but was getting knocked about and weight went all to pot. Almost all in the trees so turning pretty mandatory.
I still loved it though. I wonder about shorter narrower skis for duff days. Does anyone have suggestions?

Maybe you are hangry? Or have eaten too much brisket and drank too much beer and the "babes" aren't interested.
Same rules apply to internet forums, cheer up or jog on buddy.

@motdoc, nope, just too many white toes, blue fingers and broken bones aquired through rule 5.
The real trick is . . . Not to rely on the internet for high end/specialist instruction.
You, like me and many others have gaps in our skillsets that hamper our general reasonably good abilities. Your OP is a question that obviously requires observation, introspection and instruction with a qualified instructor . . .
But I quite like being an arße too

TBH my skis are too big for tight trees in bad snow. I was just looking for some advice on touring skis that turn well in bad conditions.
It was all good today minus 18 though, so definitely skiing cautiously. Getting better at skiing is my problem, I'm not outsourcing that. Step one I'm going to start skiing everything with a pack on to acclimatise more...I pretty much ski everything on the hill happily.
My ski buddies are a professional prospecter=badass and a ski instructor doctor so I'm very lucky in that respect.

I'm 5'9" and 76kg and also ski the slightly older 185 Bents in the same width. For days when the snow is cruddy or if I will be doing a fair bit of piste skiing (the Bents are pretty tiring to carve) I recently got some Nordica Enforcer Free (not the standard more piste oriented Enforcers) in 104mm width and 179 cm length. On piste they turn amazingly but they have a lot of rocker and perform damn well in all sorts of off piste conditions. If I had to be limited to only one ski they would be my choice. Saying that though, the Bents turn very quickly and I use them for most of my Austrian forest skiing in all sorts of conditions.

@Scarpa, I've a soft spot for Nordica skis too, I've a couple pairs of (now getting a bit elderly) Hell N Backs that really suit my weight but way too much of a handful in trees. I did have a couple days on some Kastle MX 90 somethings that were a lot shorter than my usual giant planks but couldn't really have fun with then in the woods. For there I really need my snowboard . . . but I'll just have to keep persevering with the planks
I have heard some nice things about the 'Line Blades' and if I get the chance I'll have a play on them.

I’m the same size as you and can highly recommend the Kaestle FX96 HP in 180cm. It’s my piste/chop ski but is also fab in powder. After a few days on the DPS Spoons, which are proper fat skis, I took them out today to mess about with the kids and it was a pleasure

@Masque, If you get a chance demo the Enforcer Free range. They have them in 104, 110 & 115 widths. Much more nimble off piste than the standard Enforcer range.

@motdoc, I cannot believe that a 120mm ski will be anything other than misery on classic BC refreeze. Ouch.
So tool-wise I'd be looking down to ~90-100mm. Blizzard Zero-Gs look lovely and get well talked about. I have Black Diamond Route 95s which are now the Helio and I find them pretty good in everything so far (although we don't tend to get BC style powder, they have had a few pockets of >50 cm deep fluff). A very experienced touring friend loves his Volkl "Rise Above"s and I've seen lots of them out and about round here (Chamonix).

@motdoc,
Are you going to be using them for touring and if so do you have a weight limit? e.g. The Enforcer frees are around double the weight of the Völkl "Rise Aboves".
For touring skis in such conditions I would probaly go for something between the two i.e. around 3.5 kg / pair which is the approx weight of your Chettlers I think.

@DB, Yeah, the EFs are pretty heavy and stiff. I have frame bindings on them so for touring they are fine for a couple of hours but not ideal for long touring days. I love the weight for cruddy snow and downhill runs though, they blast through everything but still ski like a much lighter ski in the trees.

You know it makes sense.
|
@Scarpa,
Yes I doubt any touring ski will match your EF's for stiffness and performance in cruddy snow.
Salomon MTN Explore 95 (as skied by Cody Townsend in more difficult conditions) could be a good compromise for touring or maybe the Kästle FX 96's.

@DB, I've never demo'd those, would love to try. A few around here who want something stiffer than the Atomic Backland series use the Bent Chetler 100s, although again, they are more downhill oriented.

I tried the MTN 95‘s at the ski touring Testival (Nov 2019 @ Kaprun) and was surprisingly impressed. Let‘s hope it‘s on again during Nov 21.
