Hi guys,
I have been skiing this winter with Streetracer 8's which i really enjoyed, the downside was the vibration at speed, i am an intermediate skier, so i go off piste a bit but mostly tend to stay around or near the pistes, i hear that crossfires is a good ski, but then hear that until u get a decent speed on them they are harder work, if so, what ski would be suitable as a midway, the flexibility of the streetracer 8 but with less vibration at speed
thanks all

MKGuy, welcome to snowHeads!
I'm no expert but I believe flexibility and flapping at high speed are inextricably linked. I got my first pair of skis this season (Volkl 5*'s) which on paper are, I think, an advanced/expert ski. To be honest this doesn't describe me very well, but I seem to get on with them fine. If you're interested in the crossfires I'd just give them a demo and see if you like them.

I just demo'ed the crossfire with fall line and did like them alot, atm they would be my next ski, but you need to try them to see if they suit you.

MKGuy, welcome to snowHeads but also apologies to you for the small number of responses to your query which would normally have attracted a deluge of posts each keener than the next to convert you to their personal favourite ski . This is down to the current crisis of identity our beloved forum is going through : those forlorn few who like me feel that this is a general snowsports forum and those who feel it is for the exclusive discussion of the seemingly still ongoing EOSB (who will henceforth be known as the lucky e-SOBs ).*
Are you thinking more of a piste ski for occasional off-piste forays or an all-mountain ski or a ski more for off-piste with reasonable piste performance too? Do you like big fast or small fast turns? Are you heavy or light? How many weeks skiing have you done? How much indoor/dry experience?
*I'm not bitter that I didn't get to go. Honest. |
Hey thanks for the welcome, let me see if i can respond to some of your questions, I have only been skiing since last august when i was in New Zealand on holiday, seemed like a fun idea at the time and i got the bug, im 44 and weigh about 75kilos but am pretty fit for a 44 year old guy, i do lots of running and play football (yes at my age) When i got back from holiday it was straight down to the mk snowdome and was there 2 or 3 times a week, then i found an older 40s group with a pretty decent coach that met every tuesday morning for a couple of hours and she really helped me get ready for my first real ski holiday, i went to Bansko in Bulgaria for a week and took a 1-1 coach every morning whilst i was there, i thought i did pretty good so back to the dome to continue to learn in Jan i took myself to Davos for another week and wow, there i really opened up, and found most of the reds pretty easy so went off to the sides and tested myself on the moguls, Feb took me back to Bansko for another week and the skiing was great snow was fantastic and so i just had to book another holiday March which i found the snow a lot more powdery and challenging, i went to the US (work but took me boots) and had a couple of days in a small mountain in New Jersey before finally spending a week in Chamonix, so basically i have crammed in about 5 weeks this year and feel pretty confident taking big fast turns or zigzagging pretty quickly.
In Davos there were big wide pistes and great long trecks must admit i enjoyed both, in Bansko i started going off piste and really enjoyed that too. I dont think i will ever want to be over adventurous so i would say mainly piste with the occasional offpiste escapade, hope that didnt sound like a full life story and bored the hell out of you
Back off to New zealand for August so wasnt sure if i should just stick with what ive got or if someone would reccommend a ski that handles like the streetracer in turns but can give more stability when im going on long speeding runs

Welcome to Snowheads MKGuy, I'm quite new myself. One thing that constantly puzzles me on here is one particular member's name. SMALLZOOKEEPER, please explain when you have a minute or is it a French thing ?
Oh yes, skis, well you probably know more than me but I think weight and build affect how you find different skis, I didn't get excited by the Crossfires or HotRod Eliminator or Nitrous (all well reviewed) but I immediately felt at home on Rossi B2's. I am a low intermediate weighing just 75kgs.

Charlatanefc, Nice thought but I've bought B2's now. The eliminators reviewed well but they maybe a little too advanced for me or I'm not heavy enough for them, anyway they didn't really float my boat.

Controversial opinion coming up here...
When you say you get vibration at speed, what do you mean exactly? Maybe the money is better spent on lessons rather than skis?

Absolutely, I have taken quite a few lessons, u can never learn enough, in this case what i am meaning though is when i am going on straight runs down a mountain if i try to keep a straight line the skis tend to vibrate, nothing that makes me too uncomfortable but speaking to the people at my local shop they have told me that this is a problem with the streetracer 8 and i should wait until this years model comes out as it will be improved.
