@motyl Good point on the prior avalanche. You can clearly see the break line just above yesterday's one. The tracks you see were made by the two skiers exiting after the slide. I couldn't see exactly what he did because I was on the ridge at the top but I know he dropped in from where I was at the top and entered the avi zone from (viewers) left, then it looks like he descended a bit, realised it was sliding and pulled out to skiers right. You can see his traversing track coming out. He waited it out just above the thick (viewers) left hand break line and then kick turned back to ski down the edge of the (viewers) right hand debris. One mystery for me is how the viewers left part got triggered. Either it was by his kick turn just above the break or it propagated from one side to the other leaving that band in the middle in tact. Seems odd but if you compare the before and after photos you can see how much snow had built up in that section so not surprising it didn't take much to bring it down.

I don't know the area like you do but I'm reading that as three avalanches today in total, all in a roughly similar area.
In that case there were 9 people caught in total, of which 4 dead and 2 seriously injured.
Is that how you see it?

Yet another sad day on Saturday in France:
The first avalanche occurred late morning at Valloire, a village close to the 2,642-metre (8,670 foot) Col du Galibier mountain, killing four local people aged between 42 and 76.
They were among a five-strong group of walkers one of whom was found safe and well by rescuers after two helicopters were scrambled.
The second avalanche claimed three lives early afternoon near the 3,779-metre Mont Pourri, near Les Arcs ski resort some 150 kilometres (91 miles) north east of the first one, prefecture sources said having issued a warning of a "particularly high" risk after recent days saw heavy snowfalls followed by falling temperatures.

@powder addict Yes a terrible day yesterday. The initial interviews did refer to the Galibier victims as "randoneurs" but in fact that was in the ski touring sense. The avalanche happened on the glacier de la Clapiere or at least in that couloir / run out. Apparently two people were sking down it as three others were going up. Only one survived. Today I heard that one group was with a guide. I haven't seen that confirmed officially bit it's entirely possible. Yesterday and today I was walking along the snow line on the south facing side of the Maurienne and nearly every north facing bowl opposite had slides on them. It really looked no-go, it's been sliding everywhere including places I skied only a couple of weeks ago before the latest precipitation and the redoux.
This is a report (via data-avalanche.org) from a guy who made a snow pit on the way to Pas de la Beccia which gives a good idea of the snow conditions here in the Maurienne;
Une analyse du manteau faite avant l'observation, sur l'itinéraire classique du Pas de la Beccia vers 2600m indiquait :
* environ 40 cm de neige récente reposant sur une couche fragile active.
* en dessous, une trentaine de cm de neige plus ancienne, assez dense, reposant sur la couche fragile formée au-dessus de la couche de sable.
* autre couche fragile sous la croûte de regel formée par la couche de sable.
Enough to make anyone think twice!

That was my first thought on the Serre Che one but it was down as spontaneous. And at Longe Cote there is no infrastructure.

Saw this "hommage" to two of the 4 who died in the Galibier/Clappiere avalanche.
They were clearly very experienced guys who'd been absolutely everywhere so clearly poo-poo Happens.

Yesterday on the Aiguille du Midi. Deep fresh everywhere.
BUT the day before 2 dead on the Midi and yesterday 4 dead elsewhere (source PGHM).
1st was a young freerider dropping into the Couloir Cosmique and setting of a huge slab avalance
2nd was a older guide soloing the Cosmiques arete and on easy ground, the same slab layer avalanching him into the Vallee Blanche side.
There has been summit to valley natural slides in the Argentiere basin yesterday!
