It's a really good move, @holidayloverxx. Since I've retired (ages now.....) I've had a lot less need, or desire, to spend money on expensive travel - because life seems like a fairly permanent holiday. |
Travel and holiday aren't the same thing though.
One can have a holiday without traveling too far. Or travel far while not on a holiday.
Some people like to travel. And if they can't do so at the employer's time and expense, which majority of people can't, they can only do so during their annual leave. Hence combining holiday with travel.

@abc, I don't want to travel as such...but I do want to spend more time than I will be allowed in Austria.

@abc, Since semi-retiring we like to travel, mainly working. Covid and Brexit have screwed that up, so we are having to look at UK based unconventional jobs to keep afloat.

My wife is shopping in Truro today and, by all accounts, making a pretty good job of blowing any savings before they materialise.

Hold on to them just incase we have an economic meltdown as a result of Brexit and Covid. In the meantime I'll go out on my bike more and enjoy what I already have.

This!
That's what I've been doing so far. But I didn't really consciously decided to "hold on to them". Just my concern about the economy was a "demotivator" in spending them.

My ski fund remains untouched in the hope it can be spent. I have however been upgrading all my home cinema kit since the first lockdown. Found we’re watching a lot more films so that’s the justification. Also been overpaying on the mortgage.
The big thing about the lack of certainty this season is the lack of excitement and something to look forward to. Right now I’d be buzzing for the forthcoming ski trips.

Going to look at going for a whole season next year! Save the money earmarked for this year. Then book flights early next year. Book one resort for 6 weeks buy season ticket then...
Who knows I can but dream....

Sunk it in a trip to Barbados to see my Dad (he lives there) - we go next Thursday!
(To be honest that is the saving from not skiing at Easter)
Only committed £43.50 for my share of the Tunnel for January so that won't go a long way!! |
Well that aged well, bloody lockdown starts the day we were meant to fly....and of course BA haven't cancelled the flight so here we go with trying to re-arrange.....

Downstairs loo redone and fitted with Japanese toilet - no longer concerned about the toilet roll hoarders
Patio for the lower back garden, two metal sheds and replaced side gates moved forward to this year and done.
Instead of a 4 person ski trip to Canada for new year

@ski, very nice. It looks in excellent condition. What is it - an R80?
It appears some people spend a lot more money on ski holidays than I do. Perhaps the question should be what are you going to do with the time you are not squandering on skiiing and enjoying yourself?

Wow - that was going to be an expensive holiday! How are you liking the Japanese toilet? I'd like one of those.

I was scared by all the buttons. I had this strange fear that one of them was for the rotating wire brush

Got a refund from last seasons April week in Canada and had a shed built on the footings of a 60 year old dying greenhouse. Soooo what to do with the rest of those savings and with the funds saved and accrued for this season........?

You could store the rest in the shed.

Yep DJL, I could convert the savings into gold bars and stack them up in the shed! I wish!!!!

Bought a share in 3 racehorses trained by my sister. Instead of 3 ski trips for 2. We all need a bit of excitement, especially in the current circumstances!
