Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Think we'll have to wait for the exact detail from Castex in the next few days.

Unconvinced worth opening lifts if from Jan 20. Much grumpiness here that a. He didn’t give decision yea or nay, b. What’s the good being able to open your ski shop when the station’s closed ...

Worse than expected from a skiing perspective but better from an everyday one. At least I'll be able to get out out more, hiking too while it's fine. Shopping further afield. If the snow comes raquettes and perhaps rando skis. Looks as if I'll be able to get over to Lyon on 15th. She's reasonably happy, can open the shop and should get at least some Christmas shoppers.

Feel a bit silly trying to interpret all these posts when I didn't follow the actual announcement. But can I assume from what I've read:
- more shops opening 2 Dec, but little relevance to those in UK
- travel possible from 15 Dec, but no skiing or restaurants
- restaurants open from some undefined dated in January (variously proposed as 9th/15th/20th)
- possibility of skiing from similar date or a few days later

Hopefully someone can clarify. Just to give us a little optimism!

+1 for @thunderer,'s question. Much as I'd love the lifts to be going, just being able to access snow and do some touring would be great. The big difference between the UK confinement and the French one is that here in London at least I have been able to ride my bike and run. The French 1km rule I think has been pretty brutal with respect to people's health and well-being.

Is it maybe a good thing if no skiing till after Christmas? I think we would have been highly likely to see big spike in January, occurring on top of high numbers from inadequate November restrictions, with almost certain closure by end Jan/Feb. This way there is some chance of numbers being under some control in time for quiet season opening, and some possibility of getting some kind of season?

@chocksaway, reading between the lines c/o Google seems like Macron and Castex might have different views.

*Clutching at straws I know outside chance of a change in policy in ten days ???????

I think some more Brit Tour Ops might throw in the towell now as, is it worth getting staff out in advance of Brexit cut off Dec 31 now?

*Copied from Connexion

Mr Macron said it was "very hard to see how they could open for the holiday period". However, he said talks are to take place between the government, local officials and industry professionals and a decision will be made soon.

It is thought that one consideration is to avoid overloading hospitals in popular ski regions with accidents relating to skiing.

They thinking is surely that they aren't in a position to cope with the hundreds of ski related injuries per day that they will get if the hordes descend over Christmas and New Year. And of course they also already well aware that ski resorts are prime for virus spreading.

At the moment looks like they are trying to wait for the vaccine and then save half term and the rest of the season. I suppose if it works out like that it won't be a complete disaster. Some clarity in ten days will at least allow some forward bookings.

5th December is the last date, more or less, for the big resorts to get things organized for a Dec 19th opening. The idea is to see if numbers in the local hospitals are better to allow A&E to open for ski injuries (the local hospitals are rammed with skiers in the winter).

With bars and restaurants closed there is little chance of picking up Covid in resort if they only allow drags and chairs to open.

The President makes the decision. The PM in France is really just an administrative role, he doesn't have any power if the President is from the same political party. So what pres. Macron said today is the way things stand at present.

Anyways hope you were all pleased to hear about the 20km rule over an hour before Macron announced it and the mid Jan figure for ski resorts a full week days before Macron announced it Happy. Stay tuned.

Vaccine will make no difference to half term, it will barely be available to the general population by then.

Stations de ski : STUPEFACTION ! !

Ski resorts: STUPEFACTION! !
President Macron’s announcement that we will most likely not open our ski resorts for the Christmas holidays when we have been working with state services to develop a health protocol for weeks has left us with a bitter taste.
Yesterday the Prime Minister told us that a decision would be taken in ten days in consultation with socio-professionals and elected officials from the mountains.
Very disappointed to have been concerted so that this incomprehensible and above-mentioned decision is stopped by the President.
It will plunge tens of thousands of professionals into immense difficulty. Of course I am thinking of them. I will support our Savoy and its economic players so that they are supported by the State with regard to individual situations.
More than ever, we must remain mobilized and combative because the opening of ski resorts must be done in view of the current health situation and not according to neighboring countries like Italy which has its own reasons for not opening its areas. skiable. Discussions must resume.
We cannot stop there ...

Mixed messages this week have caused frustration and anger. Local Facebook groups are hot. Another cause of anger is than trains and airlines will run at capacity over Christmas and New Year. But not ski resorts ....

@Claude B, yeah, looks like a shocking bit of poor comms/management.

Bro in law is partner in ski shop. Catches them between rock and hard place. Allowed to open so minimal/no support (including no support for staff), resort closed so no business.

And that’s just one example.

Xmas/NY represents 20-30% of business ... (in some stations 100%) ... As proposed, this will ruin many businesses/families/resorts.

Little point opening Jan 20.

Yeah, it's busy ... with mostly French families who arrive in resort, stay self catering, don't pay as much as xmas NY for accom anyway (by maybe 50-70% less?), bring all their own food, don't eat or drink out, don't take ski lessons except for young kids, ski on grandad's old Rossi Rocs as they only ski those 2 weeks so not worth buying or hiring, I mean, they were good enough for Papi, right?

So yes, it is busy, so, yes, avoid it if you don't need to be following school holidays, but it's really not the big money earning week.

This of course being on top of a poor, truncated winter season last year (late March April being when the big international resorts earn their bonuses with foreign visitors) and a more or less poor truncated summer ...

@Alpinebear, For a whole bundle of reasons I hope you get your job. As I understand it* though (and this from a somewhat terse and brief chat last night) your employer is still liable for their contributions on your social, insurances, etc. (which aiui haven't yet been waived) and so if someone isn't going to be essential later in the season, there's a big risk signing that Dec 17 contract.

* please correct me if I'm wrong, as I say, a brief and terse conversation with a grumpy proprietor.

@under a new name, true about the skis and the self catering, I’ve seen some really ancient skis around and they probably wax them at home before they go too so the ski shop doesn’t even get any ski service money

Here New Year and the 4 weeks of the french holidays are the busiest. Christmas less so. Yes french visitors tend not to spend as much during the holidays, or at other times come to that. Accommodation rental costs are similar for all 5 weeks. Other weeks can be particularly fruitful for bars, etc though. The Rise festival, already cancelled for mid December, attracts thousands of UK students trying to drink the place dry.

because the salaries are lower than the UK with more tax, and less easy credit available, so there is less money to spend.
