I appreciate the term "one trick pony" was probably not the best choice of words and didn't mean to offend by it - I get that he is a slalom specialist - but when the rest of the squad are trying and competing across a number of disciplines as are many other athletes I feel you need to question the decision to only focus on one event - there is something about being part of a team and competing across multiple races, he could make the difference to get the team through - there are number of athletes notably in slalom who are specialists and they have mix results - is training / competing a single discipline the key to success - it doesn't quite look that way

Great article in ORF today: https://sport.orf.at/stories/3073334
Quote: |
Ex-professional Felix Neureuther couldn't get out of the ranting as a TV expert. The former German ski star and now TV expert was so upset that the course was set at different speeds that he grabbed his cell phone during the live broadcast of ARD and rang FIS racing director Markus Waldner. |
Quote: |
Later, however, Waldner saw things differently at the meeting of the team captains. “It wasn't fair. We're not happy, ”said the head of race |
This reminds me of a previous interview Waldner gave back when they switched from the single run knock-out style to the now two run series:
Quote: |
Even if we did course setting with a GPS system, one run – blue or red – is always faster. Therefore, we did a harmonization for all events and we are using the basic philosophy of the run-rerun format. In this way, there is no more discussion about fairness. |
Quote: |
I think it is important to underline that the parallel event is a mix between sport and show and should not be directly compared with our traditional events – slalom or giant slalom |

It was so obvious there was a major difference in the courses; when the racers got to the under gate about half-way down, blue clearly had a longer route and red, mostly, eased into a clear lead.

I think Dave is right to only do what he does best. At his age he realistically has these Championships and and next years Olympics before the sun starts to set. By the time of the WSC's in Courcheval in 2023 he'll be 36. I know such as Lizeroux and Mölgg have stretched the career lifespan of late but these are former champions and medallists with at least multiple podiums to look back on.
Dave is consistently good, often very good and rarely bad in terms of DNF's but his best chance for a immortality in British skiing is if the 'one offs' such as these championships, happen to coincide with one of the days when he's excellent.
If I were him I wouldn't be risking injury on what thus far has been difficult snow for the sake of a no chance event.

@extremerob, @LOTA, Its why I've stated describing these events as 'farces' rather than 'races'
They are a nonsense in an actual ski resort although they do have some value in city events as slaloms for exhibition and marketing purposes with attractive purses but which don't count for FIS points.

@robboj, Lizeroux had multiple years out with an injury, he felt that he had avoided several years of wear on the other bits of his body so wanted to carry on as long as possible.

Fair enough, he was a great character and great skier but those extra years IIRC added nothing to his record of achievements apart from a couple of second run charges that lasted well into the later runners. I don't mean any disrespect to him or any of the others but there must be a point at which age is a factor regardless of circumstances?

@extremerob, I recorded the parallel from Das Erste, had not bothered watching it but will do now to hear Felix's rant.
Looking at the team event startlists I would say that only Germany and Canada are putting out their strongest teams. There were some critical comments below the articles in the Dauphiné Libéré on France not entering a team at all.

Good decision by France. The risk of injury is too high. We've already had an Italian stretchered off, plus yesterday a Norwegian doing his shoulder coming out of the gate

I'm enjoying watching the team parallel competition live on Eurosport, it's a good format imv with teams of 4 (2 men, 2 women). One of the Italian women had a nasty fall and had to go off in a blood wagon, hope she's OK.

The Swede really didn’t need that swig of red bull just before the re-run. First loss I’ve seen from a skier on the red. That sponsor won’t be happy.

What seems crazy about the BBC coverage is that they keep switching from Red button to i-Player to the website. I wish they would have it on one or the other. I don't see why they can't utilise BBC4 since it is not broadcasting during the day.

@welshflyer, Women's GS is tmrw at 9am UKTime
At least we're back to proper racing not this parallel contrivance.
Good to see Alice Robinson finally making an appearance. Will have to make my daughter watch, easier when there is a Kiwi racing.
Pity the Mens GS qualifying is on at the same time tomorrow, it looks like a right United Nations and could have been interesting to watch. Loads of Iranians and even an Irish skier. Are there any slopes and lifts (not dry) at all in Ireland?

@ster, There is an "Irish" skier in the Women's race too.
I have skied with a few people in the qualifying race, I think it is on a slope that hasn't been used for any of the other events so there may not be cameras along it.

The coverage of the pre race runner was really good. The drone went straight down the course following the skier.
