@DB, me too and he nearly had it until the last interval - I wonder if he thought he had a chance given the timing so went for it in Run 1 - couldn't quite see an error or where it went wrong for him at the end

We don't really talk biathlon here but I just saw Bolshunov the current world cup leader seems to have lost it at the end of the relay in Lahti two days ago.

Looks like he lashed out after the Finn blocked a pass in the closing meters!

@extremerob, does look like he did lash out in the run in, I guess with those poles flying he could have caught one and thought it deliberate? But worse, he seemed to crash into and shoulder barge the Finn to the ground well after the finish line. But handshakes all round later Did anything come of it?

Well the crowd was definitely missed tonight - Schwarz is looking like a rising star in the Austrian camp, and good to see Noel coming back into form - Pinturault showing again how solid he is!

Also realised it has been quite a while since I have heard them play Ca Plane Pour Moi by Plastic Bertrand for the French racers as they come into the stadium.

@extremerob that's cross country skiing with Bolshunov. The biathlon is a much more genteel world Very Happy the ability to hit a target size of a good ball from 50m means you wouldn't have to be so crass as push him over!

Was so disappointed for Michelle Gisin in the ladies GS today. She had a blinding first run.

She always seems so genuinely happy in the finish area even when she's not top of the leader board, can't help but like her and want her to do well.

Vlhova has dropped off her early season form, but still chucking results in at the top end of the leader board.

Sure you get the well heeled hospitality crowd attending but they are not typical.

Well at Schladming we heard all about Von Groenigan's parents last night, and also that Michi Matt is now called Mario, and countless times that those gates at the end would cause issues (they didn't apart from the US guy who jetted himself across the line in spectacular manner. Laughing Ed talks a lot of sense though, I like his comments about being late in the turns etc, the other just appears to read from a script and quotes stats, all very nice and rehearsed but not adding much imv.

Surprised to see the 2 Austrians crash out in such a manner at the end, Feller and Matt. Matt seems to be struggling and having a lack of confidence issue, and Feller trying just too much perhaps before he's settled in. Popov excellent, great second run by Kristofferson, well done the3 French lads to podium.

The Women's DH training today in Garmisch was cancelled as well as the DH tomorrow- due to the warm and wet weather. The revised schedule is now:

Having been to Monza where Alonso finished on the podium in red, it isn't a patch on the atmosphere of the N24, not even close.

Anyway, Feller definitely an all or nothing skier, it's one of the reasons he's so good to watch, he properly attacks the course even when he doesn't need to and always looks about 2 turns away from disaster.

At the risk of missing something on the threads running hot on vaccines and brexit, I thought I would see if I get some help in filling in some gaps in my understanding/knowledge about last weekends Schladming slalom Run 1 as I didnt quite get some of the points on how it panned out in terms of the development of the course.

So the standings after run 1 for the top 10 were

I understood from the commentary that the course got harder after the first few bibs , and yes, of the top 6, 5 are from the first 6 bibs. And no one bar one from bib 7 to 18. Then from 7th to 10th rank these are from the bibs 19 and over.

So what I dont get is why did the course get tougher so quickly after the first few runners, if indeed it did, what caused this? If anything, given the soft snow cover at the start, this would be slightly cleared by the first runners to expose the harder pack below, so this is so much more difficult to ski on for these guys. I would have thought that such a clearing of soft stuff might make the course faster?

Then, did it get easier to allow the 20+ bibs (who are not as good as those starting 7 to 18?) to get into the top ten, if so why did the course then improve? Usually it gets rutted and then harder the more go down. I thought the commentators did say that the course was perfect later on and this was a big chance for the higher bibs to get up, so implying the course was getting better.

Isnt another explanation is that the bibs from about 7 to 18 just skied badly rather than all being down to the course?

So what dont I know? Polite, helpful answers please.

@ster, my understanding is, and I’m not a former racer, but what I gathered from the commentary was that it’s all to do with set up.

I think there was an assumption the softer snow on top was meant to hold for longer it seems it didn’t. Allowing later racers to adjust set-up equipment once the news fed up and tech could make the changes.

I then also heard them mentioning there was high humidity in the air which was exposed to the cold icey layer below - not sure what effect that would have though Puzzled

I doubt so many top ranked skiers skied so badly.

@ster, Visibility ?? (I did watch it, but can't remember if it was snowing or not Sad ... :: age has few recompensations )

@albob, first run it was pretty stable throughout - in the second run it got a bit heavier in moments + wind drifts on certain runs - if I recall Ryding just escaped a drift as he came over the 2nd roller.

@ster, You could look outside the top 10 as well, there were a bunch of really high numbered bibs in the second run - 39 43 47 58 62 66, almost all the other high numbered bibs failed to finish rather than being too slow. The softer snow on top of the ice won't clear away all in one go, for a while you will have basically "dust" on top of the ice which won't provide as much grip as later on when you are down to just ice.

@albob, as @extremerob, says I think the visibility wasn't too variable during the runs from memory.

@extremerob, makes sense. I didnt grasp the importance of the adjustments they could make. Do you know what they would have done or been able to do in the time available?

This one is looking pretty interesting now for the Aerni after the second run. Got the time in the bag and watching the course get worse and worse.

Watching the slalom in chamonix - the snow conditions are just terrible!

Climate change is having a very obvious effect on the snow and race conditions.

If I were a FIS executive I would be thinking that races need to move out of the traditional valleys and higher up onto glaciers - yes weather/ wind becomes an issue but at least the snow is race worthy.

If you want spectators then they need to be able to get to the race, there is currently a requirement that all WC race venues are able to be reached on foot.

You can drive up to Soelden, and I think to Kaunertal, but don't know of any other glacier that is easily accessable.

Run 2 of the second day of the men’s slalom in Chamonix starting in a few mins at 1130

Second day of the women’s super G has been hit by warm and wet weather, possible start time of 1230 if the conditions improve and the fog lifts.

@rjs, warching chamonix again today it really makes you question some of the classic lower lying valleys/resorts.

I’m sure there are a lot of higher places to choose where the base isn’t as low as Chamonix or Garmisch.

@extremerob, Agree, yesterday was a farce from Cham. Todays was heavily rutted but yesterday bottom 1/3 was just slush.

@queenie pretty please, of course that is a risk as equal as it seems that warm weather and rain has become, Exactly the same @rjs, with too much snow sometimes being the same issue with not enough in other places.

I don’t know what the solution is but I’m becoming less satisfied watching races with poor snow conditions - we can’t control the weather and the changes during a race but we can try and choose a location where the piste remains in better condition throughout.
