The whole of Europe appears to be in no better a position in terms of case numbers, death rates and hospital admissions than 9 months ago. And now a new super-strain on top. Quite simply, nothing has worked.
Given this state of affairs, the vaccine appears to be the only realistic hope of salvation.
We're already looking forward to summer skiing as our return to the slopes - but now thinking even that may not happen as we probably won't have been vaccinated and UK residents will be barred from the EU...

Unfortunately looks most depressing. Just received this, from my trade organisation
Tier 4
From tomorrow morning, a new tier 4 will apply (see here):
South East, covering Kent, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Surrey (excluding Waverley), Gosport, Havant, Portsmouth, Rother and Hastings,
London (all 32 boroughs and the City)
East of England (Bedford, Central Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Peterborough, Hertfordshire, Essex (excluding Colchester, Uttlesford and Tendring).
A stay-at-home order will be issued to residents in Tier 4, with those travelling to work or for education exempt. This will be law, meaning that people should not enter or leave tier 4 areas, and tier 4 residents must not stay overnight away from home.
Further Tier 4 details are published here, which confirm ‘You cannot leave home for holidays or stays overnight away from your main home unless permitted by law. This means that holidays in the UK and abroad are not allowed. This includes staying in a second home or caravan…’
The restrictions will last for at least two weeks, with the first review due on 30 December.
Travel
New advice on travel is that everyone, in all tiers, should stay local.
Whole of mainland Scotland going into tier 4 for 3 weeks from Boxing Day. No cross border travel. Pretty devastating, I just hope it will actually suppress Covid numbers.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Dare not call it a lockdown.. Plus if they do they'd have to pay out more in compensation..

Christmas is lost. Forget it. It was never going to happen.
Relaxing rules over Christmas was guaranteed to cause a third wave mid - late Jan, and probably write off the entire season.
Another lockdown Feb-Mar and they will just abandon the pistes. Not worth the cost and effort of maintaining them.
Hope a strict lockdown (2-4 weeks) works to reduce numbers, and lets us get to the Dollies for the Birthday bashes. It's our best chance.

I have a friend who lives in France and who has come to England to be with her family over Christmas. If France bans travel from the UK, will she be marooned here?
You know it makes sense.

From various media reports it does look likely that France will follow.
Just maybe, like the first lock-down, French residents will be able to travel to France, who knows?
If that is the case maybe I can still travel on the 28th as I have an attestation that I have applied for French Residency etc etc - clutching at straws though
From Daily Telegraph just now The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Italy have banned flights from the UK and Germany is considering limiting such flights in an attempt to ensure that a new strain of coronavirus sweeping across southern England does not establish a strong foothold on the Continent.
The Netherlands banned the flights for at least the rest of the year, while Belgium issued a ban for 24 hours starting at midnight and also halted train links to Britain. The Netherlands said it would assess "with other European Union nations the possibilities to contain the import of the virus from the United Kingdom".
Italy plans to suspend flights to and from Britain over fears of the new strain, Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio said in a Facebook post.
"As a government we have the duty to protect Italians, for this reason, after having notified the British government, with the Ministry of Health we are about to sign the provision to suspend flights with Great Britain," Di Maio said. "Our priority is to protect Italy and our compatriots."
Eurostar's trains between Belgium and the UK have been cancelled from Monday, Dec 21, following the Belgian government's announcement that borders with the UK will close at midnight on Dec 20.
No trains will run between London, Brussels and Amsterdam. Trains continue to operate on the Paris route.
The World Health Organization is calling on its members in Europe to strengthen measures against coronavirus due to the new variant circulating in the United Kingdom, its European branch told the AFP agency on Sunday.
Spain said that in response to the moves by some of its European Union partners, it had asked the European Commission and the European Council for a coordinated community response to the new situation.
Otherwise it would act unilaterally to defend its interests and citizens, the Madrid government said.
Outside Britain, nine cases of the new strain have been reported in Denmark, as well as one case in the Netherlands and another in Australia, according to the WHO. "Across Europe, where transmission is intense and widespread, countries need to redouble their control and prevention approaches," a spokesman for WHO Europe said.
Meanwhile in Germany, officials were considering "serious options" regarding incoming flights from the UK, but have not yet taken action. The Irish government will make a statement on travel restrictions from Britain later on Sunday, but sources said a ban on flights and ferries to and from Ireland was under consideration.
The EU governments say their response comes in reaction to tougher measures imposed on Saturday in London and the South East by Boris Johnson, who revealed that a fast-moving new variant of the virus is 70 per cent more transmissible than existing strains and appears to be driving the rapid spread of new infections in London and southern England.

So if we had shut the borders what exactly would have happened ? When exactly would you shut them, would you allow uk citizens back in or shut them out, what about all the lorries bringing goods in? What about business travelers generating income to pay the taxes to pay for the nhs etc etc.

See New Zealand and Australia.
Only time will tell if the international border closures have had been beneficial. So far from a medical perspective it has been a resounding success. Our economies seem to be traveling along ok relative to the rest of the world.
The big question is exit strategy. Which politician will make the call to open the border and inevitably cause an increase in covid infections. Will that be accepted by the public once the vaccine has been rolled out?
*Imports and exports are still happening. There is some kind of exemption for trade.

I thought someone would bring up those two, Heathrow handles four times as many passengers on it's as travel through every point of entry into NZ. By the time the Chinese admitted to it the virus was already present and spreading.
Its easy to say how to control things but in reality it was never going to happen.

Well, BA have cancelled our fingers crossed flights to Calgary in April, which we booked to make ourselves feel better after ditching our Japan trip booked for late January. Not being able to deal with the possibility of a total write off this season, have used a couple of vouchers from yet another cancelled flight to book Geneva in April. So many options from there it seemed the most sensible daft choice.
Meh, who bloody knows. But my feeling is that the later the booking, the more hopeful (we can deal with tests and quarantine if necessary) - and perhaps and maybe is more optimistic than not bothering at all!

As a season I agree - it's a write off - but I still haven't given up all hope of sliding badly down an Alp in April.
Though doors are rapidly closing and options getting more limited, I still have a few cards I'm trying to play, and that's still trying to get out before the 31/12

Regrettably, I agree with you. I think the flexible and determined will be able to make spontaneous dashes for the Alps, and will enjoy it immensely, but timing one's run in between policy disasters isn't taught at ski school.
I hope March and April may see some broader openings, but I'm not confident they will.
