Got a fine through the post today, busted for doing 89kmh in an 80kmh limit .
I didn’t realise cross border fines were up and running (obviously now Googled it’s been in place for a couple of years).
Ticket seems to suggest there’s not much tolerance, it seems to suggest you’d be done at 84kmh.
So be careful out there!

Twice in 3 trips! Neither at full motorway speeds but when there have been temporary restrictions.

@ish303, The tollerance is +5% which I think is the required accurracy of your speedo. Unless your speed is a lot above the limit the fine is quite modest and there are no endorsements on your licence.

I was under the impression that the French Police have no way of enforcing payment when you are out of the country? I have heard however they were employing UK based debt collectors to recover fines?

It's not 5% but 5kph in areas with a limit less than 100kph and 5% in areas with a limit above 100kph.

The way the French speeding tickets are written, the speed they claim (80.6) is AFTER they've adjusted it for the tolerance. So he was actually doing 80.6+ 5% or 5kph, whatever the tolerance is.

No, never got a fine in 25 years of driving in France full time. I've got this failsafe method of avoiding speeding fines, it's called "sticking to the speed limit" but let's keep that to ourselves.

I got done a while ago (90 in an 80, soon after limits changed) and now stick pretty religiously to the speed limits. Amazes me how there are any french left driving given they all overtake me. I've Brit friends here who have picked up numerous fines. One had his UK licence confiscated when stopped by the gendarmes, taken to a cashpoint and told he was banned for 6 months. He was about 40kph over though.

I've never been caught speeding in France despite much driving there. I tend to use cruise on major roads and drive in selected bits of Germany to play with my car.
However... I was once driving in the summer in Italy, probably the only UK car in a line of Italian cars all of whom were running at precisely the same speed, which was slightly above the local speed limit.
The local police pulled my car out of the line and fined me alone. Later I heard that the Italian football people had just lost to the English, which may well have been the motivation. My only ever speeding fine.
It works the other way too. I was with my girlfriend in Washington State when she was pulled over for being 5 miles over the speed limit by a classic fat and armed American cop.
She's the world's most careful driver and has likely never exceeded the UK speed limit. I could barely contain my amusement.
When the cop realized that European driving licenses (at that time) are more complex than American I think he was scared off, and he let her off.

you are assuming they still have valid licenses. About a million French driving with no license or insurance but with anpr only just being rolled out it will take a long time to catch up with them.

Some years ago, I went to a large event in the Loire region; it culminated in a black tie dinner in the evening.
200 people; business owners up to hospital consultants kind of crowd.
It can best be summed up as, everyone got poo-poo faced, then drove home; apart from the ones who drove to the after party, cracked a couple of magnums: then drove home.
First drink drive offence was not even a ban then apparently!
The camera on the road down from Chamonix had the guy overtaking me last summer, but I remembered it was there from a trip in March.
Probably why they were overtaking.
If you keep it under 150 on the auto route, you don`t stand out, 140 is par for the course.
If the signs say cameras, there are cameras: frequently in the centre divide.

Had a few unfortunately. Driving along Lake Annecy the speed limit changes constantly and it's easy to get caught unawares, plus the autoroute through the middle of Chambery is another hotspot.

Not another 'speeding tickets in France' thread! If you stick to the limits more-or-less, you'll be ok. If you don't, and it's an automatic camera, the ticket will pop through your door in a week or so. No points, fine is about 40 euros I think, just pay it and forget it.
Anyway, now that we're an Independent Sovereign Nation, maybe all that data-sharing stuff will disappear. Unless it's Johnny Foreigner parking on Our Double Yellow Lines and getting away with it...

I've "benefitted" from that small town cop laziness before - dinging me for rolling very slowly through a fairly well hidden stop sign in California (i.e. vans parked along the kerb obscuring it) he noted the combination of UK licence and Canadian plated car and clearly realised paperwork would be excessive plus he'd have had to take me to the station reducing his ability to make his quota just hanging out by the known trap.

I’ve had another look at the ticket and where it was, I’m pretty sure I remember the box. And now my memory has kicked in I’m pretty sure I made sure I was under the (what I thought was) limit by looking at sat nav (which said 90).
So going to have to be conscious that the sat nav could be out of date.

The whole 80/90 thing in France is a bit of a nightmare, and I think has been covered in other threads. Relying on the sat nav is tricky, especially for 80/90 limits, which are a bit changeable. This reminds me of a dinghy sailing instructor telling all his eager young learners "head out of the boat" i.e. look around at what's going on outside!

Yes in Isere it's still 80 but if I drive over to Hautes-Alpes it's 90 on the same road the D1091 to Briançon Signs are are pretty much up to date though.

Yes caught on the camera on approach to eurotunnel in Calais as the speed limit changes to 80. Camera located in the middle reservation and also snapped a few other owners from our apartment block. Fine arrived within days of us returning to the U.K. and they make it very easy to pay via an app.

There are plenty of signs round the lake to show the speed limit.
Never had a speeding ticket and don't have satnav.

Perfection isn't required.
On the other hand people complaining about insurance costs/ speeding tickets/ parking fines seem to me to be a particular type of individual and the cause of their problem seems fairly obvious, at least to everyone else.

I've been going to the Le Mans 24hrs for years and on another forum there's always a list of people complaining about being "targeted because they were British" and that they were "only doing 160kph and got marched to the cash point to pay a €600 fine"...or to put it another way "only doing a speed that if stopped in the UK would default to an instant loss of licence".
My friends and I drive down/back on the A roads as while slower the roads are empty and more fun to drive in a sports car. I've only ever seen the French police giving tickets to French cars, and the only time we've been stopped by the French police was in some village roadworks...and then only because they wanted to take some photos of the cars

Whilst on my bike, I got stopped by the police for doing 180kph in a 90kph limit in the middle of nowhere. I wasn't marched to a cash point, but I was escorted to the local station where they threatend to impound my bike and deport me....Not one of my best days.
Ended up with a 270 euro fine.....One of my best days..
