Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski hire for the season

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi, is it possible for those working in a resort to hire skis and other equipment for a season for reasonable rates rather than paying expensive weekly rates charged to tourists. Similar to how a season lift pass costs around just 3 individual weeks. Or are you better off buying your own kit when you get there.
Thanks for any advice.

Lots of people do it here (CH). You also have the possibility to try other skis and to get a service every few weeks.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Why would you want the hassle of using dubious quality kit if you're going skiing every day? Unless working in result actually means only skiing a couple of days per week.

@Dave of the Marmottes, they don't give the dubious stuff to the people that can walk in every week and kick up a fuss

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

To be honest I thought stores that did loaned kit for very nominal charges to staff in the right roles where they would be able to refer punters to the "best shop".

Depends who you are working for.

Just to give a bit more background, it's for my 18 year old son who's got a job as a kitchen assistant in a resort hotel. Company is Inghams. Ski hire is not included. He's a decent skier from family holidays but maybe not yet ready to buy his own skis. So was just wondering if the hire shops offer reasonable prices for extended hire rather than the £100 per week prices they charge to the one week tourists.

Yes, they will. And if they know he’s there for the season, they won’t give him any rubbish.

@SlipnSlide, do Inghams use a particular hire shop in that resort? If so he should just show up and ask if they can offer a special deal (in folding money) to him as one of the Inghams staff. Maybe the resort manager would facilitate that for him.

I'd be really surprised if the hire shop that Inghams recommends to their punters didn't also do a season deal for Inghams staff even if Inghams aren't footing the bill for the kit; there will be lots of others in exactly the same situation as your son.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

This ^^^. And tell them he’ll send any clients he serves their way. If he can walk in with a few clients and hand them over to the staff that’ll help.

Long time ago now, and I was the rep so sent clients their way, but the rental shop Inghams used let me take out any skis in the rack

 You know it makes sense.

What do you call reasonable to hire compared to buying a reasonable priced pair?
Maybe scan the classified, beg/borrow from a local if they have any spares?

This. IME, the Swiss are very accustomed to seasonal ski rental, even if you live in e.g. Geneva or Zurich.

The French less so.

If he's out early enough to go to a locals' ski sale, and knows enough or can find someone to go along, at least round here you can usually pick up a bargain.

Otherwise, we have a couple of shops that somewhat specialise in selling 2nd hand/ex-demo/overstocks.

Or try e.g. Glisshop. A chum just acquired a new pair of fairly high end Rossis from them for less than the wholesale price.

But easiest is probably to see what Inghams shop(s) will do for him. Back in the days of yore our staff would get "given" the use of (typically) low-mid range kit for the season, as part of the deal for taking our clients to the shop.
