Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

We've done this in Washington. The wolves do fine. Some ranchers lose some livestock and it all falls predictably left and right.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Off-piste doesn't exist in the same way as Europe in Colorado. If you mean back country/out of bounds you really shouldn't be there alone anyway due to avalanche risk. That all said, you probably have more chance in your plane crashing on the way out that being attacked by a wolf. Wolf attacks are extremely rare.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Alastair Pink, it is sensible. We do that as well, and it is a surprisingly small amount of money.

Surprised this is only happening now. Wolves are back right across the alps, to the extent that farmers are beginning to demand compensation for losses (surprise!). We even had some in the forest around Starnberg, or at least one male was run over by a car a couple of years ago.

Not a surprise, and perfectly justified in my view. If a country decides that it wants to have wolves back in certain areas (a move which I would support) then those people who suffer a financial loss as a result should be reimbursed by a fair compensation scheme ( I would suggest market value of the predated animal plus say 20% to allow for the hassle of claiming).

Here in Washington (in 2018) we had 27 wolf packs which killed 11 head of cattle and one sheep, and injured 21 other animals. Total compensation paid to the ranchers was just under $14,000. More at wdfw.wa.gov.

Seems like an acceptable economic trade off for all the biodiversity that putting an apex predator back in the food chain encourages.
