Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Canada Ski Work: Pay a Fee?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Apologies if this is in the wrong place: I've come across various companies promising to find me a job in Canada and arrange the visa and various other formalities but they want £1k+ as some sort of 'finder's fee'. Are they dodgy or are they the best option to secure work out there?

Sounds dodgy to me, if under 30 you can get a working visa via bunac.
Gap year Canada are good, in Banff

They’ll be dodgy.

You can arrange everything yourself through the Canadian govt website.

Finding a job is relatively easy as well. They’ll find you stuff like fruit picker or driver and then claim they didn’t have to find you a certain job etc and your money will be gone.

It's not dodgy, as in there are legitimate companies offering exactly this (visa and job support). BUNAC are just one example. The question is are any of them good value? Probably not.

If you are young enough you can apply for a working holiday visa yourself through the Canadian govt website. It's a lottery system so you may or may not get one. Also they used to only draw them once or twice per year so there can be a lot of uncertainty not knowing if you will or won't get one.

If you have the experience/skills it's worth seeing if you have enough points for a regular work visa. Less uncertainty and not waiting around for a lottery draw.

It's relatively easy to find a job once in Canada as long if youre not picky. If you want a specific job or wage things may be harder.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks all: I'm too young for a Canadian 'working holiday' visa so I'm going to go with the time-old French ski gap yah.

You are younger than 18? You might have a hard time finding work full stop.

Not necessarily. You have to be 18 when you apply for the Canadian visa, and the time frame in which you apply for it for a gap year means that if your birthday is later in the year, you won't be 18 in time to apply for it. My son's birthday is May, and all the visas for the following winter are long gone by then, but he had no problem getting the usual gap year stuff in Europe cos he was 18 by then.

Canadain resorts are all publicising how they need to recruit locally and try harder to do so this year due to a lack of foreign workers

@boarder2020, whoops sorry I meant too old! Thanks for the advice though.

Out of interest how would I get a job at 33? Would I have to be better qualified e.g. IFMGA or BASI 3/4?

Not surprising. We used to joke if Canada banned Australians the ski resorts would have to close down. Other than ski patrol the majority of people employed by the mountain seem to be foreigners on gap year kind of trips.

What qualifications do you have? If you have a degree or some kind of trade I would suggest putting your details in the calculator as you may have enough points for a visa.

Have you considered not working? I realise it is a little more difficult financially, but the obvious benefit is just being able to enjoy your time. If you can save around £3500 that should cover 3 months out there plus flights, ski pass etc. It's what I personally do. Somembody once told me doing a month without work is better than a full season working (he had a pretty good argument, but they are 2 different things).

@boarder2020, sorry to be cheeky but any chance you could send me the same message please. I actually planned to take a month or more next season and after visiting Whistler in March I was well up for going back to Canada but covid has put paid to those plans, but I'd still appreciate the info as I'm still planning to do it though I've had to put it off till 2022, booked a couple of weeks in France instead for 2021 on the off chance the season isn't totally cancelled.

Sent. By the way for anyone reading this, you obviously can't do Whistler or Banff on this kind of budget. Most of the other resorts are ok
