Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

My mum was a teacher, who was once asked how to spell "fur".

I was once asked how to spell "judiciary". As the student was 16, (and I'm a hard woman Laughing ), I told him to look it up. He insisted he'd looked both online and in a real dictionary and it wasn't there! I was sceptical so I asked him to show me.

He did. Under "d e w" Laughing .

As a dyslexic I used to find dictionaries almost impossible to use, as they demand the right letters in the right order.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@maggi, you might enjoy this - you have to be of a certain age. A teacher asked a pupil to produce a sentence containing "judicious". They came up with "Hands that judicious can be soft as your face".

No.

The American word is spelt and pronounced differently from the English word.
As often is the case American usage actually comes from English before the English language changed:
https://www.etymonline.com/word/aluminum
That doesn't dictate how you say stuff, but if you're in the US the American word is the logical choice.

There is a lot of merit in the US efficiency in spelling.

However aluminium is not one of them. It's not an "English" word, it's of Latin origin - the rules of Latin are not up for discussion (see the "The Life of Brian" for confirmation), nor are the rules of metallurgical classification.

Aluminum was "accepted" as a spelling only in 1993 - this was because Americans are Be Nice please! stupid - can't spell properly, can't speak properly.

One Americans do get right is Nike (ni-kee) compared to our more silent e version, the company was named after the Greek goddess of victory (who is also represented on one side of Olympic medals). Quite a fitting name for a sports company. I still can't bring myself to pronounce it the correct way though Laughing

Their use of z rather than s in many words make more sense.
