Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

ECM completes the set....still some warm air wrapped in from the SW, and 8 days away

NH profile, showing mean ECM ensemble pressure anoms has +PNA Index (Pacific North America), usually seen with El Nino, southerly US jet, with -AO, -NAO, southerly Euro jet, Greenland high, Scandi high, Euro trough....La Nina early season footprint....but not perfect, a little too far west still

The two latest EC operational both shows low pressure coming down from northwest towards the Alps. Might see some heavy snowfall in the next weekend over large areas. Far out, but still looking quite likely.

As @polo showed, a good taste of moderate La Nina over Europe now. Talking about La Nina, after that sudden warming in Enso 3,4, the temperatures have dropped quickly again. Where will it go next?

Next 10 days temp anomalies, probably deepest over SW alps

Looks like a best case scenario from the Friday options shown....initially the trough heads towards Iberia, but just about manages to phase with the smaller Tues-Wed low that will have arrived from the NE down towards Genoa.
Here's the key timeframe on thursday, where the bigger NW low is about to link up with the smaller Genoa low, tilting the main trough SE.....see noz chart above for Sat
.

Good chance this pattern gets stuck for a week or so, with the 8-10day showing the Canada high sinking, heavy snow eastern seaboard, Atlantic high edging further towards greenland and the euro trough disrupting against the semi-permanent Russia / Scandi high

Footnote for nerds....the pacific low is odd for a La Nina base state, likely MJO related ....convection pushing east? AAM is diving -ve into mid Dec....wonder what it all means, if anything.

A good pasting for the Dollies and Osttitrol next weekend, eh?

Would lay a good base for the season, might not need to fire up the snow cannons so quickly.

    Still some small swings east and west on the track of the weekend low, but a good illustration of how even with a strong -NAO and -AO, some parts of the alps could end up with some warm air.....low pressure too far west brings up warm air on the eastern flank, so could briefly end up with a FL some 2000m higher at the eastern end, and the heaviest snow on the south ridge. Thankfully the whole system pushes east into early next week.

    Very widespread snow across europe now likely, with GFS 06z showing 88cm for Scotland, 17cm for Wales out to the 8th

    It’s just over ten years since we woke up to heavy snow in Scotland, there was also thunder snow which I had never experienced before, normally snow doesn’t last long in this area but due to the cold and the council being unprepared we were walking on ice for about a month, the skiing was fantastic all winter. snowHead

    @Jellybeans1000, Interesting read. Exciting start of December in Europe with H in northeast and a lot of activity in Southern Europe/ the Mediterranean. A classical moderate La Nina winter situation. The situation in North America at the moment is anything but typical for a moderate La Nina historically. Could become a very good snow season in the Alps if this continues. EC operationals/ENS and latest GFS operationals/ENS all suggest that in some forms this weather pattern will last until mid December. EC ens keeps the temperatures slighly below average in the long range in the Alps.

    High pressure in place over the entire West Coast of USA. Jet stream has decided to check out Canada for awhile. Maybe by end of next week, a few weak lows will start to break down the high. Until then, Canada is a good place to be, if you want fresh snow. GFS and Euro runs seem to indicate a few signs of life for the 2nd half of December. Time will tell...

    Yep, expecting 1 to 1.5 meters across Dolomites at altitude. Snow level will vary between 800 and 1500 meters on Saturday. Flooding likely to be an issue between the southern Dolomites and the pre alps with possibly 200mm of rain expected. Dont think natural snow will be an issue for the Val Gardena world cup ski races mid December.

    We had a lot of wind last night but it is very warm this morning and doesn't look like any new snow in the mountains around Grenoble.

    Update 11am: precipitation has started, falling as snow to around 1200/1300 meters maybe 900 in the Haute-Savoie

    SLF forecast.

    https://www.slf.ch/en/avalanche-bulletin-and-snow-situation.html#snowpack

    Weather forecast through Friday, 04.12.2020

    Skies are expected to be heavily overcast, accompanied by short foehn-induced bright intervals in the northeastern regions. Snowfall down to low lying areas is expected over widespread areas, most of which will fall in the southern regions.

    Fresh snow

    By Friday evening, the following amounts of fresh snow are anticipated:

    - Ticino, as well as Main Alpine Ridge from Lukmanier Pass as far as the Bernina and southwards therefrom: 30 to 40 cm;

    - Upper Valais part of the Main Alpine Ridge and western part of the Jura: 20 to 30 cm;

    - remaining regions of Switzerland: 5 to 15 cm over widespread areas;

    - along the central and eastern parts of the Prealps and in northern Grisons, it will remain dry by and large.

    Temperature

    At midday at 2000 m, between -6 °C in the southwestern regions and -3 °C in the northeastern regions.

    Wind

    In the western regions strong-velocity southerly winds, in the other regions of Switzerland blowing at storm strength;
    in the valleys of the northern regions, foehn windstorm, slackening off in the afternoon.

    Outlook through Sunday, 06.12.2020

    Skies will be heavily overcast. Winds from southerly directions will be blowing at moderate to strong velocity, in the eastern regions temporarily blowing at storm strength at high altitudes. In the northern regions, a small amount of snowfall is expected to fall down to low lying areas on both days. On the Main Alpine Ridge from Lukmanier Pass as far as the Bernina, approximately 40 to 60 cm of fresh snow is expected to fall each day, in the remaining parts of the southern flank of the Alps approximately 30 to 40 cm each day. The amounts of fresh fallen snow expected to fall on Sunday are still uncertain. In the furthermost southern regions, the snowfall level will ascend to approximately 1500 m.

    On the southern flank of the Alps, on the Main Alpine Ridge from Upper Valais into the Engadine, and in the southern parts of the Urner Alps, the Glarus Alps and central Grisons, avalanche danger levels are expected to increase markedly. Increasingly frequent naturally triggered avalanches are expected to release, including even very-large sized ones in isolated cases in shady avalanche starting zones above approximately 2500 m. On Saturday, avalanche danger level 4 - high - is expected to be reached on the Main Alpine Ridge from Lukmanier Pass into the Engadine and southwards therefrom. In the remaining regions of Switzerland, avalanche danger levels will also increase, but not as strikingly.

    Yes there is some snow and lots of accommodation available - check airbnb. But the beginner skiing will be in La Chaux so look for accommodation nr Medran (main lift) or one of the bus stops serving it if you are hauling kids.
