Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tyrolia Free Flex Plus bindings?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've just acquired skis fitted with Tyrolia Free Flex Plus bindings. Midway between the toe and heel units is a screw which can be turned through 180 degrees and is labelled "180° activation". Anyone know what this means? If I adjust the setting am I likely to notice any difference in how the binding or ski behaves, or is it just a bit of marketing with no real-life benefits?

It stiffens up the link betwen the toe and heel piece, and therefore the flexof the mid section of the ski. In the "tight" position it stabilises the ski quicker after say a compression, or making high energy short radius turns.

Net effect is that it will give you more controllable, predictable energy and rebound when turned to the "tight" or "loaded" position, and reduces chatter at high speeds.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks for that. In the "open" position would its benefit be that it allows more/softer flex in the central part of the ski?

rob@rar.org.uk, I have the same binding on my Heads, and I leave it in the open position - they are stiff enough as it is!
Which skis did you get?

A pair of next season's Volkl Karmas. I guess I'll also leave the bindings in the open position, although I'll be curious to see if I can detect any difference when the are in the tight position.

rob@rar.org.uk, I'd be interested to see if you could notice the difference on the Karmas - mine are on the iXRC1100SW.

As most of my skiing is just blundering around I tend not to notice subtle differences in equipment (or the way it's set up). I'm just hoping that I notice a difference between the Karmas and my slalom skis Wink

That's a good point, wouldn't want to mix and match when I go to the ski locker in the morning! Or perhaps I wouldn't notice Wink

Yup. and it will still allow the toe/heel pieces to move relative to each other to maintain a consistent forward pressure.

I tend to leave mine in the open position (iXRC 1200SW, iSuperShapes) unless going into a racecourse in the groomers.

Speaking of noticing subtle things - just tried the new Salomon Z12 bindings - they have dispensed with the traditional adjustable "wings" on the toepiece, and the vertical adjuster. All automatic now, and the spheric thingy wotsit has gone too. Replaced with a slider AFD.

And oh boy. Can you now feel the front of the ski under your foot! Much more direct connection and control of the ski now that the spheric wotsit has gone from the likes of the S912 binding!

The downside is that it's now on a rail (Pilot system gone hurrah) - and much heavier.
