It is the best time of the year to go touring and the mountains feel so tempting. Hard to stay away, but I guess most of us would feel awful knowing that resources had been used on you on a rescue. Just like you @Weathercam, , I have started to get the bikes ready. But that also makes you think, can I actually do anything these days that increases the chance for needing medical? I dont know the answer and the psychological effects of people just staying home will probably be huge as well. Difficult times....

Seen that on Road.CC also. For the French, that'll be a right kick in the goolies.
Not entirely sure I see the whole logic behind this though. Sure, it avoids unnecessary visits to hospital if anything happens but how many actual cycling-related accidents are there? I'd put money on there being more DIY-based attendances to A&E over coming weeks as more people self-isolate but decide to fix the gutters or start building that shed they'd been putting off.
Hoping it won't be enforced here because that's the one thing I'm looking forward to.... stuck at home working and with two kids, need to self-isolate somewhere else

So that's completely clear then. 1 or 2 kilometres.
So which is it? 1? or, 2??
At least it clarifies my run tomorrow.
Because "jogging is fine "near" your home" didn't really clarify it and I really don't want to be paying €135 per run.

@Weathercam, can’t believe you didn’t jump onto your touring gear and go and rescue him!!! At 1000m vertical per hour you’d have been home with a cuppa within an hour

@pateman99, @Specialman, yes there have been various stories most of the day but nothing too official, but now looks like we're in the same situation as ski touring and that's feckin ridiculous!
Trouble is I don't want to chance my luck as I really don't want my bike getting confiscated, though that is OTT I know.
Wouldn't mind if the weather was grim but it's great cycling conditions at the moment.
Seems that we're still allowed to walk/jog within 2km of your house, so that's an 8km loop, but that's pretty difficult to find in a mountain valley!
And as a postscript I've only seen two skiers today!
@BobinCH, I'd been on the beer with friends here, and no jokes about that's why there was a degree of confusion

@under a new name, yeah, dangly bits isn't it? I read something earlier about short walks being ok, “but not three hours”. And you can't drive to go for a walk, but I'd figured that anyway and we can reach the forest directly from the house on foot. But you can't go up the mountain. What about on the road? We live on the mountain... (ok we definitely don't live up the mountain, but what does that mean anyway? Top of the village? The church?)

It sure is! Not seen any cycling restrictions here yet so taking advantage while we can. Somewhat surreal with empty roads and just a few other cyclists and handful of people out walking.

@Scarlet, apparently the gendarmes (on Facebook) told a local that it was 500m radius from the house.
I get the whole thing, truly I do, but a. I am as likely to trip and break my ankle in my driveway and b. am I more risky in either direction going shopping per this morning (essentials only of course, e.g. 0% beer) or spending 40 mins alone in the middle of a forest on a light jog.
I don't mind the rules, but at least make the rules in the first place.
I feel for the poor folk answering the @Sports_gouv twitter feed - they are getting quite a lot of grief.

@Scarlet, and yes all those points you made, like you say how can they be interpreted?
We can go straight up the hill behind us on a path and go up 2km but that could be construed as walking up the mountain etc etc
Thing is we're all trying to be sensible, but elsewhere people are taking the mickey and as ever the majority will suffer for the actions of a few and the rules will become more draconian and we'll be like Spain and Italy in a few more days etc
At least we have the dogs !

Just to get back on thread a little bit, should people really be touring any time of the year if you can’t communicate efficiently with the rescue services?
Don’t snap back too hard I just think it is a valid question, there are an awful lot of visitors, predominantly to the Alps from abroad and is it just expected that the pghm are going to be fluent in English/Swedish/Norwegian etc?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Pumba, on those groups, I think you'll find that the PGHM are (at least) adequately fluent in (at least) English and I haven't met a Swede or Norwegian yet who couldn't speak perfect English.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Yet there was an obvious misunderstanding somewhere, so either the French wasn’t adequate to communicate efficiently with the pghm or they weren’t proficient enough in a second language ! Thankfully all appeared to end ok, I just think it is something that people just take into consideration when calculating the risks when ski touring, the ability to communicate effectively with rescue services, and not just during confinement obviously !!!

Having done a few training sessions with the PGHM and having had to unfortunetly call upon their services while working as a mountain profesional and now also having passed my Securism 1 n 2 (First aid for Firebrigade/Ambulance/Skipatrol/etc.).
I would say the Chamonix PGHM probably have somone on duty who can comunicate in resonable english, but the rest will stuggle and may end up having to go through a 3rd party translator.
As for ski patrol, I've know in some resorts resort to calling upon liftys with passable (but not by any means great) englsh to translate! In Megeve the one Welshman is regularily called by mountain operations, even the inquiry desk to translate!
Myself when getting my CartePro, I had to prove I spoke passable french in case of emergency.
When calling rescue in Switzerland, they switched me to an english speaking operator in about 3 secconds!
|
|
|
|
|
|
If the person in trouble rings up themselves then with smartphones and gps they should at least be able to locate the problem. Personally I have an old nokia but should be able to give a map reference. Think it is totally unreasonable to expect everyone in the mountains to speak whatever the local language is. With translation technology or ringing a third party to help there is usually a solution.

Most Swedes and Norwegians I know can't speak perfect English. Reasonable to good English, yes but still quite a few typical errors for Skandies.
If you call 112 you'll be able to speak to an English speaking operator.
Macron to make another announcement tomorrow.

@under a new name, what I did not mention in the blog was that I was concerned about the very subtle nuance of who was calling who back and I did call an extremely qualified person and asked him to double-check with the PGHM and he told me not to worry that they had my number and would call me back, even then still was not happy and that's why and went to my neighbour.
The number I had on my phone for Rescue used to be direct to Briancon PGHM but I was told that number now redirects to PGHM Control in GAP and they then contact the local area, and now I have stored that number as they call me three times.
I've been out and about any news on what Macron has said?
I spoke to Police Municipal in Briancon and they confirmed cycling interdit.
And yes all the Scandis I know, and that's probably more than Ex-Pat Brits, have a tremendous grasp of Anglo Saxon

he's talking tonight I think at 8pm... les francais sont les imbéciles (quote from the interior minister)
Looks like the lockdown will be for 45 days at least although he should only announce a 15 day extension tonight. Fines increased to 375 euros.
More restrictions on the lockdown. Anyone without a fixed address to be rounded up and stuck in guarded hotels.

@davidof, additional 15 days very much to be expected. Can't see shorter than 45 (I take it you mean overall?).

Not sure the brits are any better, I see plenty of people walking along my street and the usual number of joggers.
I watched a bit of france24 last night on Police patrols in a Paris banlieue having to tell people to go home.

@rjs, in fairness, you have only been "advised" to social distance and your bars and restaurants and theatres and cinemas can still open if they want.
Ours are all closed and we need to carry a signed document if we want to leave our home and go anywhere. That said, there were 250 fines yesterday for non-compliance in Savoie and Haute alone

Could you clarify a bit on this, because I thought going out on exercise was actually recommended. It seems to be in the official advice on the lockdown in Belgium and we were being told here until last week that outdoors events are fine. That changed with a ban on mass gathering but as long as you maintain a distance simply going out for exercise and fresh air should be good. Is that not the case in France? Are they planning on imprisoning the whole population in their homes for a few months? That should be fun if there's another heatwave at some point in the future.

@Bodeswell, I believe you are only allowed to got out alone (no other members of your family). You can walk your dog, but must not stray more than 2km from your home address. Someone on FB had walked to the pharmacy yesterday which is 45 minutes away from her house and was fined. She was supposed to drive there instead.

I understand that also it is necessary now to have a form for each activity ie you cant put shopping and exercise on one, it has to be two separate ones.
