Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

returning to the UK would have been the only option if indeed that was the case.

but would you be allowed to return? I'm horrified at the idea of an "over 60s continued lockdown" too. I'm in an extremely fortunate situation, where I am, absolutely no complaints, but the prospect is still appalling.

Normally, yes you can return. The border between the UK and France is open (I checked last night).

Wait and see for the restrictions though, I can't see over 60s will fly as a lot of over 60s are still working.

@davidof, no, if we leave that's it, as we can't return until all restrictions are lifted, we could only return if we are French Residents, which we are not, as we would be classed as second homeowners and thus unable to travel or enter France.

In the meantime we're quite happy* in our bubble Cool

Yes, I felt guilty about having to rely on him, too. From what I have read, Portugal could do with every nurse it can get. I felt less concerned about the New Zealand where, for now, the situation is well under control. But certainly we have run down our indigenous training if nurses far too long. I hope we ramp up our training for the long term, so that we do not have to poach nurses from other nations in future.

Bit off topic, aren't we?

anyway the snow has melted around here: poor season + 1 month of non stop sunshine and summer temperatures. I bet some of the ski resorts were pleased to close and pick up the compo on offer.

Macron said that travel within Europe would be possible. The UK / France border is not closed. Travel within France is highly restricted at the moment. Unless you have a good reason you can't travel anywhere at present and not before 11 May at least.

@midgetbiker, that's what I thought and as UK not part of that assumed travel would be excluded

@davidof, border may not be closed, but looking at Eurotunnel twitter feed they are saying no travel unless you have correct paperwork - so to all intents closed

If the EU wants to exclude the UK from travel over the coming months it is understandable - although I do think there will be pressure from tourism sectors in many EU countries who want the money.

So finally managed to get a picture this time after two failed attempts where I asked the gendarmes and they politely declined.

This time around I was "fumbling" to find my attestation on my phone, and click Laughing

I was out on my road bike, full lycra and doing my loop.

They got out of their car and not a mention of why I was cycling, I explained before they asked, that it was a 5km loop and pointed out where I live etc he was a fit-looking dude and was looking my bike over and asked looking at my computer how far I'd been etc etc but they were all very relaxed about it all.

but to repeat myself, you can't even leave your front door currently without paperwork in France.

Back to Covid; 800 cases total in the whole of the New Aquitaine region. Not much more in the Rhone-Alpes. Grenoble and Annecy hospitals have laid off staff they have so little work for them at present as all routine operations are cancelled. It is really an Alsace and Paris thing. Annecy hospital say it will take some considerable time to restart normal service.

Our maire has sent this. I think he is being very optimistic but must have some insight.

@Boris, us too, we're thinking of September, but who knows if even that will happen. @Claude B, that seems a little optomistic. I have bookings for 6 consecutive weeks at the apartment from end of June. I am about to start thinking about what I am going to do, as balances are due to be paid in May/early June. I am hoping that the May 11th date gives some more leeway and relaxing of rules, but I wouldn't blame them if they didn't want to travel either.

@Weathercam, I think it's illegal in France to publish anyone's photograph without their permission. Let alone a gendarme.

Quote:
Before taking a photo of someone you are required by law to ask the individual’s permission. If you want to publish it in anyway you have to ask their permission for each specific usage. Any object that is created by or is the copyright of an artist, or designer must have permissions to be published in specific contexts. Any owner of property can assert rights of ownership of property, again the photographer needs permissions to publish, regardless of whether the image was shot from a public or private space.

Quote:

The other indications I’ve read on relaxing restrictions include continuation of social distancing, reduced passenger loads on public transport (including planes), continued ban on social or sporting events etc. The comms above sounds overly optimistic, albeit fantastic were it to be proven safely possible... and surely these decisions will be made at a national level and not left to local interpretation?

Had apartment booked in Golfe-Juan for two weeks end July beginning of August. Balance on apartment was due 2nd May. Decided to cancel last week as can't be sure flights will be going and it's a lot of money for apartment. Tough decision, we love the area but there will be other summers

That's a shame but it is a risk we are in the same dillema for early July for Italy.

Missus went to Grenoble today, about a 40km round trip. Loads of traffic on the roads including quite a few foreign cars. The Autoroute was very busy, Grenoble city very quiet. No police about.

We had three attempts to book a chalet in the French Alps for the end of June. All three attempts failed. One very obviously because we were english, where they added a new charge of €500 on top of the listed price. I got a French friend to enquire, and she did not get the same charge...
Anyway we we decided to camp and book just a couple of week before we go when we see what the weather is like, so close shave there. The chalet that wanted the €500 euro is still unoccupied, and the owner came back to use a few days ago asking if we were still interested, and she could waive the €500.

My mate who lives above La Grave rang me up yesterday to have a nag, and for a Liberal Swede he was being far from that Laughing

His main point is why can't they differentiate the confinement between the cities and the boon-docks.

What is really doing his head in is being unable to exercise supposedly for more than an hour, as he says it's his profession to be out all day in the mountains and keep in shape etc that said obviously his business has totally dried up for this season and his extended season in Norway & Greenland etc

His cunning plan is to cycle to do the shopping that he can't do in the little La Grave shop, and as he has no cash due to no work he can't afford to put fuel in the van, so he'll cycle down from Les Hieres to La Grave up and over the Lautaret to Briancon and then return with essential supplies Shocked

The next years may be very difficult for anyone in the leisure industry.

Here are some snippets I've gathered (note the use of MAY in any phrases)

i. A number of doctors expect Corona-19 to follow other lung infections and die down in the summer (they've been crunching the worldwide numbers on this so it is not just something they've pulled out of thin air) before reappearing in the autumn, they anticipate new lockdowns over the winter. If you depend on skiing for your livelihood anticipate this. Doctors have no real idea why lung infections follow this pattern.

ii. an Israeli doctor has claimed that the virus has a 70 day lifespan irrespective of any measures taken. That is it appears and disappears in that timeframe.

iii. a number of doctors have said the lockdowns won't work or would have to last so long to work that everyone would be dead anyway (10 to 50 years of lockdowns!)

iv. there won't be enough test kits available to test anyone but a small percentage of the population in France or the UK. It would take years to test the whole population.

v. testing may not work

vi. The virus has a R0 of 5.7, it is extremely infectious, once the lockdown is over just one infected person can cause a whole new wave, if not in the summer then in the autumn

vii. The virus is very infectious in the week before the person displays symptoms

viii. the virus may be like Herpes and hide in the body only to reappear and that it may not be possible to build immunity

It is a nasty virus and it wouldn't surprise me to hear that it came out of a Chinese laboratory, or was made more lethal in a lab, whatever the Joint Chiefs of Staff may think.

Wouldn't your mate be better back in Sweden? Maybe return to France in the future if things settle down? From what I see people are cross country skiiing and ski touring without much in the way of restrictions in Norway and Sweden.

Actually I didn't ask him that point, we talked about Sweden but not from that perspective, and I think he's from the South.

Anyway, he has a family etc not that the kids can get out to see their friends etc

Don't know whether this is the right thread, but trying to shift the winter kgs does not work on limited exercise, in fact I think I've put weight on!

This time of year every other day we're normally out ski touring 3-4hrs or I'm doing long bike rides as various Cols open and weather and conditions are good and weight loss sort of just happens.

Now I've put myself on a feckin diet and limited myself just to two glasses of red wine a night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
