Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ignoring government instructions is leading to an ever escalating set of directives.
We are still working evacuating people to GVA, but at the end of that we have to get home as well!

@RobinS, sounds really tough for all concerned. Good luck with it all. Shocking stories from France, with huge announcements lurching out every moment.

I hope HMG is going to do better, in its daily Press briefings, to explain the thinking behind the measures being implemented, because they are only going to work as a result of a societal consensus, not more and more emergency powers and troops on the streets.

They also seriously need to calm panic. The "eat and drink and be merry for tomorrow we may die" mentality isn't conducive to sensible behaviour, any more than the "catching Cov-19 is a death sentence for the over 70s" hysteria. There's a difficult balance to be struck between complacency and crying wolf.

@Weathercam, i thought I have read somewhere that ski touring is, if not banned is not to be encouraged, as although the lifts are now closed, and it must be lovely for you tourers, as if there are accidents you will be diverting the emergency service from other duties.

You haven't misunderstood. And bragging about it and encouraging others to do the same on social media is even less cool.

Well said @clarky999 - we need a lot of things right now but diverting resources to rescue a ski tourer is definitely not one.

I think we all need to be careful about self-righteous finger pointing. There are various activities which are as hazardous - or more hazardous - as ski touring, including cycling instead of using public transport, climbing in the Cairngorms and even, perhaps, staying home getting pissed and tripping over the cat.

Been down to Bourg d'Oisans this morning shopping. Not too bad as I got there but getting busier and busier and by the time I'd finished there was a big queue outside waiting to be allowed in. Big queues at the tills but the french don't really like self service tills so I got through relatively quickly. Most of the staff and some of the customers were wearing masks.

A lot of cars leaving too although there are still quite a few people milling around.

I'm going to do something tomorrow, possibly snowshoeing. But on a very easy walking piste that I know very well. Possibly even on touring skis (but not alone). The return is on an easy blue piste which is still freshly groomed. The local advice is to take care, I believe it can be done responsibly and as risk free as other activities otherwise I wouldn't do it.

Easy for me to say, mind, as I don't watch daytime TV and hardly watch in the evenings, either, come to that. A couple of hours a week. For me, the push to getting off my backside would be turning off the internet!

In these days of streaming services like Netflix, Prime, iPlayer, etc, the concept of daytime TV doesn't really make sense for lots of people. Other than the news and some sport (mainly F1) I can't remember the last time I watched TV as it was being broadcast live to air.

Yeah, falling off ladders....

I'm old, @rob@rar, by "daytime TV" I was thinking really of all the means by which stuff is delivered to our screens, including the stuff @davidof referenced

That would improve the health of the nation no end!! Limit us to a couple of hours a day.

Might happen anyway, if workers in the power supply industry start falling by the wayside.

Jane listens to The Archers, often live. For just about everything else we stream, and often binge. I'm re-watching The West Wing for the umpteenth time, which now seems more like fantasy than it ever has rather than the docu-fiction as it was created.

Just had an e-mail from BA to say our 5th of April flight to Lyon is still scheduled for now which is a bit curious as we are booked to go to Grenoble Puzzled rolling eyes however, it is all academic as we won’t travel either expecting flight cancellations or to take vouchers if not.

Jet 2 are cheeky monkeys - emailed on Saturday to say my 22/3 flight from GVA to Leeds is "suspended" and asked me to fill in a form. Q1: Are you in the UK or abroad? Answer - I'm in the UK (wasn't due out til Wednesday on BA). Q2: How did you get back - Jet2 flight or other? Answer...erm...I'd best put "other".

Just had an email saying that I cancelled my flight no refund is due! Eh? I didn't (and haven't) cancelled anything! I am assuming my trip's off (hotel has cancelled and Jet 2 aren't going to fly me home) but I've not cancelled anything.

They are worried about climbing, mountaineering and ski mountaineering in particular, the pghm have been out and about and seen people doing some sketchy stuff today. Up to people to decide where they draw the line based on their own abilities.

Witnessed a parapente rescue just now, the helicopter flies almost daily missions to pick people out of the trees.

From Chamonix PGMH on Facebook (automatic translation):

Quote:
The sky is blue, the snow is here and the mountains are beautiful. Great is the temptation to take a walk. However, the present situation and above all to come is such that every resource, every minute that will be devoted by medical teams to mountain relief could be used to deal with the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic, and therefore , in fine, most likely at the expense of another patient. In other words, from now on, every rescue is potentially an extra relief for hospital services.

Although the rescue service at Chamonix Mont Blanc remains fully insured, we will send the message of our fellow mountain rescue doctors who specifically seek responsibility for everyone. Pending the next official instructions, we call for awareness of mountain practitioners and recommend them to minimize, preferably to suspend, their activities during the crisis.

Ok as yet we are not in lock down, at least for the next three or four hours.

Yesterday and today all we have done is skin up the empty deserted pistes, which are still beautifully groomed and no one working on them, we have also shared them with snow-shoers, other ski tourers and walkers and a massive chapeau to the guy running up to the very top of Cucumelle.

So the ski down is very mild and not at all challenging, just like a good piste ski on blue/red runs though quite superb in the transforming corduroy, I also don't go flat out as I have the dogs with me.

And no BS as I did a loop leaving Monetier and skiing back to Villeneuve I bumped into the Chief of Piste Security, Cedric who we interviewed before Xmas, and he asked me what/ where I've been and he said "Chapeau" as it's quite a long circuit and climbing.

If I knew I was going to return to all this flack, then I should have asked him his POV!

Mate who has been staying with us past five weeks and has spent the last five days in ADH returned here briefly to get his belongings to then go back to ADH to get a friend and with others, they are getting out ASAP.

He did say the Lautaret was rammed with tourers, no parking spaces available.

So yes there is a fine balance as to what is deemed to be risky, and I like to think I'm not taking any risks currently as I'm not backcountry ski touring, not least last week it was absolute shite, and as has been mentioned I've probably more chance of falling over drunk Laughing

So many geezonaires are now leaving here, some are over 70 which I find surprising going back to the UK and possibly facing 4 months in quarantine.

For sure dependent on what happens tonight we might be in lockdown and only allowed out for essentials, so does that include taking the dogs out for a long walk whilst wearing skis Laughing

But we await to hear.

We've made the call to stay here, as in the interseason we like living in our little "bubble" as we call it.

And below are two examples of why; I took these this morning in the local supermarket.

Once many non-residents flee I think here will be way better than back in the UK, I also think that the local fuzz will not be so prevalent here!

It is interesting that the govt. is still denying rumours of a total lockdown but whenever I hear someone squeal #fakenews I doubt what they are telling me. (The rumours come from people preparing the laws to put all this in place and the 45 day limit is what our M.D. told us this morning and he's in direct contact with the govt. so there does seem to be some correspondence. Our MD told us the offices will be closed for 45 days).

Anyway you are better off where you are, at least you'll have a view of the Alps, although the sea is also nice to look at.

Where did you get this information from? And surely they wouldn't stop foreigners from leaving? We are due to fly home on Thursday morning, which would be just beyond 48 hours.
