Hello folks, We " Were" booked for four days in Italy , but due to the " virus" our plans have changed . We can fly into Munich on the same days as we have our work booked off, ( march 20th to 24th) we have skied Garmish many times, and enjoy it but would like to try somewhere different. What we would like is somewhere in a two hour drive, that has if possible fairly good snow, and a few challanging black runs. I did a google and J2ski has so many resorts it would take me AGES to check them all out on google, you tube etc. But I need to book something fairly soon, so thought your collective experience would perhaps save me some time...

@biddpyat, like you say, too many to mention. With the improving snow situation I'd point you at Kitzbühel, Saalbach, Hochfügen/Zillertal or Arlberg (marginally further).
Enjoy

@biddpyat, I would be cautious about the lower resorts (Kitzbühel, Saalbach, Ski Amade etc), I know that often brings comments like "it was great here last year until the middle of April" but my experience over the years is that March snow is not like January snow and conditions are variable at best. The Zillertal is a good option as practically all the skiing in the various areas is above the tree line, there is a good variety of skiing including the glacier at the end of the valley. It is easy to get to from Munich. Slightly further afield is the Arlberg (easier from Zürich) which has as much challenge as you can find anywhere from stunningly beautiful red runs to territory for rubber legged experts. Might be worth looking into Serfaus / Fiss and Ischgl too. If you can get hold of a copy of Where to ski in Austria ( https://www.wheretoskiandsnowboard.com/ this has short summaries of the resorts online as well as selling the books) there is a lot more detail. Later in March is often perfect weather for morning skiing and afternoon terrace sitting / beer drinking......

Thank you for your help, I appreciate it. We have decided to go for mayrhofen/Zillertal area. I am sure we will manage to find some skiing there, I have to say Ryanair were very good and changed our flights from Dublin to Milan, to Dublin Munich in seconds no fees, and we got a good deal with a hotel in Mayrhofen, ( well a bit outside). So all is good.

Mayrhofen is low.
Lech has a much better snow record and much better ski area.

@Whitegold, son, you are obviously unaware of the fact that Mayrhofen is part of the Zillertal. Never mind, with more effort things will improve.

@Whitegold, Perhaps you should stick to Bulgaria! The town of Mayrhofen is situated at around 600m which is indeed not particularly high, even in the eastern alps. However almost all of the skiing area is above 1500m and tops out at around 3000m on the glacier, hardly low.
Lech does have a good snow record and has a great skiing area but it is not within easy driving distance of Munich therefore of no interest here!

We will just get the whole area pass, and our hotel is right between zillertal and Maryhofen. There is a ski route down to the bottom of the gondola nearest to our hotel, I watched some videos so it seems a tad dodgy in late march. Having a car will mean if we go to an area and ski the best of it we can go somewhere else the next day, or after lunch. We ski quite fast so it doesn't take long to get the feel of a place. Can you ski back to the village in zillertal? Even a ski route? I hate downloading if I can avoid it.

@biddpyat, you would be best asking on the Zillertal thread https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=149457. My (probably imperfect) recollection is that the runs to the valley itself are few and liable to poor snow / closure. Not sure which village you are referring to, the whole valley is the Zillertal (literally Ziller valley), maybe Zell am Ziller? There are excellent transport connections up and down the valley both train and bus so the car is probably not needed.

Mayrhofen skiing tops at ~2,400m, and Hintertux glacier gondola bottom station (that does got to ~3,100m) is ~30min ride from Mayrhofen.

@Engelberg, Zillertal is fine late March, as is Kitzbühel and Saalbach most winters. Only possible problem will be that it gets slushy later in the day, but seeing as I love skiing slush I don't really see this as a problem

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Conveniently all passes from 2 days or more are full Zillertal area passes, so there's no need to make any decisions about what pass to get. Only a decision each day as to which village area to ski.
There are runs to village to Kaltenbach, Aschau, Zell am Ziller (well the base station), and Mayrhofen/Ahorn. My experience is don't bother with the village runs at the end of the day to get back down. Do them early, when nobody else is doing them and they're not cut up wet cement/porridge, and then go back up to the top. Then get gondola down at the end of the day.
Snow's been fine up on the mountain every time I've been in late March. And knee deep in the village one one of those trips.

Thanks folks, yup deciding where to go will be our biggest dilemma, good stuff. I don't mind skiing slush, I just hate crowded roads, with people slowly weaving in front of me, I would go down an icy black before a red road with good snow and too many people. (impatient oul sod that I am) . I am just excited to get that last bit of skiing in before I pack away my skis. ( was worried as we were booked for italy).
