Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Scottish resorts laden with snow, Brits afraid to travel to the Alps = an opportunity?

Should the Scottish skiing folk spend a bit of marketing cash alerting fellow Brits to the fantastic conditions in the Scottish resorts at the mo, given that many will now be afraid to travel to t'Alps given this whole corona virus thing?

Yes. Though whether they have any cash to spend is another question!

Unfortunately Scottish ski resorts are generally full when the snow/weather plays ball, so its unlikely to bring much repeat business. Nobody likes queueing. Obviously midweek is best .

That's great to hear! Glenshee have had a very unlucky time of it in recent years, hopefully the snow is here to stay.

Is it still half term in the UK though? I've been hoping to head over midweek to try it sometime and don't like the sound of that

No, half term is finished. It has been busy because we have had a year or two of poor seasons so a hint of good weather brings us all out the woodwork Madeye-Smiley

I've had some amazing days at glen coe in the last few years with no queues and lovely weather. Was a bit later in the season though, around april time.

I was at Glenshee today - Thursday. Great snow but high winds meant closed lifts and quite big queues. This week has had a schools ski competition which has made it even worse.

We can tolerate short runs but add long queues and that makes it a less than ideal experience. I spoke to someone who took two hours to get lift pass and ski hire sorted out. There is just not the infrastructure for big numbers of skiers and there never will be while the unpredictable snow levels and hugely changeable weather continue. If you spot the odd day with good snow and weather you have to drop everything and just go for tomorrow it could all be gone; great for retired locals like me but difficult to plan anything in advance. There is no comparison with France etc.

Oh yes, and the road from the south to Glenshee is too narrow for modern vehicles having been planned in the 1940's and disintegrating like most in the area; all the money is probably being spent on dualling the A9. Don't get me started on that waste of funds.

Here's a quote I've just found from a Fort William hotel (on Trip Advisor).
"Owing to Coronavirus we were forced to cancel our planned ski weekend in the Italian Alps, so decided to ski for the 1st time in Scotland, which ok the face of it wasnt filling us with galaxies of joy and to be fair we came prepared to be disappointed.
What a surprise we had, the skiing was really good on the nearby Nevis range and the Cruachan hotel exceeded expectations.
Nice bedrooms, relaxing bar and the hotel obviously has employed a good interior designer. Tasty breakfast included in the price and 'nothing is too much trouble'friendly staff.
Well positioned on the Loch and 5 minutes walk to the centre of town.
We will definitely stay again."

In the West, is Glencoe typically more crowded than Nevis Range on a good weekend, or is it more less the same?

@DonardFlump, ceteris paribus, I'd say Glencoe gets more crowded. It's the first place people hit on the road from Glasgow (or Edinburgh). Glencoe's upper mountain uplift can be a queue bottleneck, it helps if the Rannoch button tow runs in parallel with the Main Basin T-bar. Nevis has a quad chair but the upper lifts are all draglifts. Greater variation in terrain at Glencoe unless Coire Dubh at Nevis is 'open', but then you have to routefind out.

It depends. Glencoe has a fairly small car park and once it’s full, to park the car will require you to do one of these: 1. Block a single track access road blocking in thousands of people
2. Block the main road (A82) to 2 way traffic
3. Walk a fair distance (roughly 30 minutes)

I have been stuck in a large queue (on the way back from Nevis) when people have taken option 2 but PC plod was definitely in attendance and didn’t look entirely pleased to be spending hours on a Sunday afternoon directing traffic (which includes plenty of lorries and fairly regular coaches) around badly and illegally parked vehicles. Would not have fancied returning to that welcoming committee! If every tow is working (including the top button if needed) queues never seem that bad. If you can ski to the car park reasonably that soaks up lots of people.

Nevis has multiple car parks and fairly extensive verges along the fairly long 2 way access road so plenty of space but is a fair distance further for most people. If Glencoe car park is full, I expect most people would choose 45 mins drive rather than any of options 1-3 above so it can be quiet at first but end up quite busy. Queues again determined by how fierce the drop into the back corries is and if the Braveheart is going as lots of people skiing there will reduce queues elsewhere. Common to get queues at the button tows Linnhe and Alpha and Summit. Usually not much on the quad or Rob Roy and rarely at the Braveheart. If the weather stays nice you might have a queue getting the Gondola down but people will fill it and the queue moves fast.
