Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi,
I am going snowboarding this Christmas and sometimes I do question why I go back because of the pain, but I just love it!
I was hoping someone could tell me how they may have solved their hypermobility foot pain issue. When I board, especially at the start of the holiday, I can do about a couple of runs and then my feet will be in agony. I know I have hypermobility so my feet roll inside by quite a fair amount, so I have bought countless of insoles but still seem to struggle. I would love a pain-free holiday, so if anyone has any recommendations, would love to try them.
Has anyone gone to a podiatrist to create specialised insoles?

Have you spoken to/been diagnosed by a Podiatrist in regard to this particular issue?
Other than suggesting that, I can't help. Sorry.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

To be honest, my feet are in agony at the start of every winter. Then after a few days riding they get strong and I don't notice it any more.
Probably not the answer you want to hear!
I have bone spurs on my heels and a (massive) bunion as well as pretty wide feet, so with every new pair of boots, I immediately heat-mould them with spacers in place to make some room for the bone spurs etc and to blow-out the toe box to give some space for the width of my feet. That helps a lot. Also use custom insoles to keep my feet stable.
Probably the best thing you could do would be to go snowboarding a few times on dryslope or indoors in the run-up to your holiday so your feet get used to it.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

If you're hypermobile have a Google of kinso taping for EDS... Insoles etc aren't going to support your joints much, taping however can help support your joints... Although you might need quite a bit of it!

I could have written this post! I am hypermobile and never attributed it to the pain in my feet when boarding but it makes complete sense.
I don't have any answers for you unfortunately, I've tried rigid heat moulded insoles which give me extra arch support but any help they provide is minimal. I did get advised to wear thinner (and clean) socks every day. Again, minimal help.
I have used kinesiology tape to strap my knees together on previous holidays which definitely helped my knees so I will be looking in to foot strapping to give this a go. Unfortunately I will (hopefully) be boarding over new year so I won't be able to give you any feedback prior to your holiday.
I hope you find something that gives you some relief. I feel your pain!

No first hand experience with your specific issues but often have other kinds of injuries in other sports where I need extra support for a while at the taper end of rehab. I also recon some supportive taping could be something to look into. Someone already mentioned kinesiotape, this is elastic tape. There is also white and brown leukotape that have far less stretch. YouTube is full of taping video's, I'm sure you'll find at least three different methods to tape for your specific case...

What if you looked outside the box at one of the most common issues.
Cems states this issue in every boot footpain thread over 15 years or so.
You have to expand on what he says ... dig deeper forget the visa plastic and physically specifically snowboard/ski train/stretch .
If the foot pain is bad enough you will study flexion to ski/snowboard and train/stretch it ..although most will buy into tangents/shopping experiences etc .
A lack of Flexion in the lower leg chain and ankle ie. lack of dorsiflexion "can cause very serious footpain".. so as to stop you and even drop you,the pain can be that bad in some cases.
The Anterior Tibialis is one of the big culprits in the lower chain its critical for skiing snowboarding.
If you have a lack of flexion you have to id the issues, then go hard at stretching or increasing lower leg chain ROM and also further strenghtening though that increased ROM ...ie. both through compression and extension is needed ideally.
Will punters do it ..of course not... they will have a shopping experience an talk shite .
Those with enough pain will do it after all else has failed..... just make sure you go the distance long term, x 2 or 3months before.
For some this may be very frustrating or seem a waste of time ,dont give up just do it regularly ,you dont have to win anything, just complete the job long term regularly.
