We would like to do our first family ski trip with 4 children at Christmas in Italy. We have secured flights to Milan.
Husband and I haven't skied for 20 years! Of the 4 children 2 are beginners (10 and 17) and 2 have just had week ski trip with school / uni (12 and 19) and were able to do reds by the end of the week. By Christmas the eldest will have just been skiing another week.
We don't mind up to about 3 hours drive and want to go somewhere with the best chance of snow, self catering and good for beginners and intermediate. And trying to keep costs down for 6!
We started looking at Cervinia, Sestriere or Livigno.
Which of these or others would be best for what we need?

@msoaks, I've only been to Cervinia of those three, and it ticks the box for best chance of snow and good for beginners and intermediates. But in December there is a high chance of windy, cloudy, overcast, snowy weather and combinations thereof. That would make Cervinia rather bleak and miserable and there's a chance of higher lifts being shut. Somewhere with the option of tree cover for bad weather would be a better bet and more likely to have a Christmassy feel.

Reliability of snow is a key issue for Christmas week skiing. That’s where excellent snowmaking in the Dolomiti area is a big plus.
From Milan the drive is a little more than 3 hours but you might want to look at Santa Cristina Valgardena or the Val Di Fassa villages, such as Pozza.
Lots of apartments. Great beginner and intermediate cruising. A few tougher pistes for progression and challenge. Good lifts. Stunning scenery.

Been to Cervinia twice, once in April where 4/6 days were very cloudy/overcast/snowy/windy and link to Zermatt closed and once this new year just gone where it was bluebird days all week. Luck of the draw as with any high alpine resort.
There’s loads of Airbnb’s in both Sestriere and Cervinia though Sestriere tends to be slightly cheaper for accomodation. Cervinia closer to Malpensa but both comfortably within your transfer time limit. Dolomites from Milan could easily become 4 hours.

We've done Sestriere and Cervinia at Christmas. Cervinia is a nicer town with more eating and drinking options, and likely to be more snow sure because of the height. The snow making facilities at Sestriere are however excellent and you do have access to the Milky Way for adventurous options. Our Christmas week in Cervinia was marred by wind closing many of the upper lifts. Either can be a lottery. Sestriere will be cheaper. In summary, I'd go back to Madonna di Campiglio. It maybe stretches your travel time, but it's a nicer town, excellent facilities and a bit cheaper to eat and drink than Cervinia.
