Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Japan: Kiroro vs Furano vs…?

OK, joining the “this vs that” resort quest chorus.

I’m heading to Asia for Christmas and New Year. At the end of it (after New Year), I hope to carve out a week to go skiing in Japan

I’ve been there before, about 7-8 years back. Of the 3 mountains I’ve skied in that trip, I like Kiroro the best, Furano is nice too. Niseko, not quite as much. The latter was busy, hectic and expensive. I’m not one who crave heart-stopping steeps or non-stop long vertical. Not too motivated for long hikes either. So the extensive hike-to expert terrain of Niseko is somewhat wasted on me.

But like everyone else, my motivation for skiing in Japan is for its fluffy powder. Except I prefer it on easier accessed inbound terrain. So quieter mountains with less powder competition would suit me better. I’m there on holiday, not to win any prize of gnarl. I had good luck at Kiroro and Furano in my previous trip. But after 7-8 years, I don’t know if those places might have gotten busier than what I remembered… but am hoping still ok?

My previous trip, I was all over the place, wasted quite a bit of time transferring from one resort to another. I told myself then, the next time I visit Japan, I’d stay put in one spot for the week. I could simply go back to Furano, which I know my way around a bit. Or Kiroro, to do it justice (only 1 day on previous trip).

Basically, I’d like it to be a location that can be reached by bus from Sapporo. Better still would be if it has access to one or two nearby mountain by bus. That way, I can ski the mountain at my base for 3-4 days, hop over to a nearby mountain for a day or two to change things up a bit. It would also work as an alternative to my base mountain in case I got unlucky with the snow pattern.

The size of the mountain isn’t critical. I can find amusement skiing different lines of the same run. And I LOVE skiing in the trees (provided it isn’t very thick/tight). So I can easily milk a small mountain for several days without getting bored. I hope this explains why I like Kiroro and Furano.

So, any other candidates like Kiroro/Furano of 7-8 years ago? I don’t mind going back to Kiroro or Furano either. I didn’t spend enough time on either one to do them justice. But then, there maybe other options I could go explore?
