There was a free covered car park next to the gondola the last time I was there a few years ago.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

That will probably be full this Friday, it is rammed in Champagny this week.
I'd go to the only pay car park in Champagny, it costs 4 euros for the day and you should find a space if you are there early enough.
Turn left at Sherpa / Galaxy discoteque and follow the road past the marie / post office and you will end up at the 2 storey car park. It is right next to the gondola so an easy walk or you can even take the lift.

They have now introduced parking fees this winter season in Champagny for the car parking close to the gondola. You now have to pay if you want to park in the covered car park near to the gondola, the multi-storey car park in the centre, the parking on the road from the gondola up to hotel Ancolie and the road down from the gondola past the mairie and hotel les glieres.
During the day the first hour is free, then it is 3 euros per hour, 16 euros for a day or 80 euros for a week. Parking is free from 5pm to 8am.

That’s appalling ! We had no consultation about it although we have a flat there . Surely everyone will clog up the no charging bits of the village lower down ?

I guess day trippers were using Champagny as easy way into la Plagne with no benefit to the village.

The local gossip is that a lot of the free parking spaces in the centre were used by seasonaires from Courchevel for long term parking so offering no benefit whatsoever. At least day trippers would have to buy a lift pass and possibly eat out on the mountain.
It was unanimously agreed at the municipal council meeting in summer as a way of raising funds to renovate the car park in the centre. That is looking a mess now and definitely needs work on it.
The cost to build the car park by the gondola was around 3 million euros and was only ever full for 4 weeks of the year. I can't imagine it will be cheap to renovate the old car park and as there are only around 600 permanent residents in Champagny I'm sure they wouldn't want to pick up the tab.

There is already a law about that, you are not allowed to park your car for more than 7 days in public parking. They could simply tow all the seasonaire cars that sit around for longer. They could even pass a bye-law requiring a blue disc and limit people to 8 hours.

Is there any free parking left in Champagny, or less than 15e per day?

And of the paid parking locations which do people find easiest for gondola access? Thanks

@capability, Most of the parking away from the gondola is free parking but wiĺl not be easy to find in peak weeks.
There is a large free car park down at les Rochers near to the free shuttle bus stop.
The smaller covered car park underneath the gondola is the most convenient for gondola access.
